Hi Guys, thanks for the replies.

I've contacted the local police asking for a bit of advice and they have given me an 'incident number' and will be contacted by local officers. I bought the TV in January this year and I've paid £384 in direct debits leaving £648 still to be paid in 15 payments. I don't know if she has sold it or not, she has just sent me an e-mail calling me all the names under the sun and said she has sold it. I don't owe her any money, if anything she owes me money for all the bills/debts I've paid off for her. Her house is rented and she's a single parent living alone (I've never lived with her, I just had the TV delivered to her house).

The television is neither hers nor yours, it belongs to the hire purchase company and if it has been sold, you are liable for the recovery. In reality, it is she who has sold something to which she did not have good title and that, if I am not mistaken, is theft.

Would I be allowed to do that?

That would be debatable, but who is she going to complain to?

Could always call the police and ask first. Or take a witness with you in case she tries to claim you've taken stuff you didnt.
You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride

You could ask the police to attend with you when you collect it.
  • I suspect she's not sold it at all....go collect it when she is out. Just get in and out with it ASAP. Put the 'wiped' key through the letterbox after!

    Will never happen.

  • Just go and get the sodding thing back!

make sure she's out and then just get it. She can;t report it as stolen because you already have a letter from her saying she sold it!

She;s going to report something she openly admits she sold as stolen!?!?!

If your ex is as bad as you said, I wouldnt go into her home and get the TV. What if she knows your going to turn up and inform the police you are stalking her and made threats to get you in trouble?

Its completely up to you and im sure everyone will agree you are in the right but whats to stop her using the law against you? For all you know she is reading this thread and seeing advice to go into her home without permission. She could easily change the locks and make up a sob story to the police about your 'threatening behavour' towards her and they see you trying to enter her home?

I know im thinking of the worst case scenario but I would try the legal route first to keep the high ground. Then again, if she is a single mother (presumably) on benefits you will end up getting £2 a week until paid back as the courts cannot take money which she and her child/ren need to live.
