growing potatoes in an empty compost bag? (Merged Thread)

You should be able to move them. Ours keep getting dug up by foxes and we just pop them back; no problems. From experience, a seed potato could give you 15 or so spuds, depending on type and growing conditions. The more you earth up, the bigger the crop.Nelly's other Mr. Hyde0

I posted this on another thread, but will put it here in case its of interest to anyone. I'm planting as Charlie Dimmock suggests in grobags standing up longways.
Cut along a short edge and empty the grobag - I use a clean plastic dustbin to store the compost.
Turn the bag inside out (just because is looks better), and roll the sides down
Put about 3 inches of compost in the bottom. Put in one seed potato and cover with a couple of inches of compost.
When there's 3 inches or so of growth showing, cover with more compost. Roll up the grobag as you fill it with compost.
According to Charlie this gives you potatoes the whole length of the grobag.
I've a few different varieties to try and will let you know how they do. I'm planting up this weekend.... don't throw the string away. You always need string!

Nah, just pop them in now, they should be fine. I only planted the last of mine last weekend, the 1st lot was done 2nd week in March, so I am hoping that I have a long cropping period, lol!
Potatoes seem to be doing fine. The 1st 2 lots I planted will need earthing up soon (must find another tyre from somewhere for the earlies!) The 2nd lot are just starting to sprout above the surface and no sign of life from the last lot yet, but they only went in at the weekend.0 -

Hi
Madhouse (sorry if I got your name wrong mad) grows potatoes in a rubble sack so I should imagine your compost sack should be fine. There's a post on here (somewhere) about it.A friend is someone who overlooks your broken fence and admires the flowers in your garden.0 -
You might need to put holes in the bottom of the bag for drainage, or else keep your potatoes moist but not water logged.0

There are already drainage holes in it.
I planted some potatoes last week in a plastic bag that I got compost in but I think this compost bag will make it easier as it already has access flaps on two sides and of course it can be used over winter for composting!0 -
Hi. I have one of those green plastic compost bins and am wondering if you can use it to grow potatoes in? This may be a totally daft question as I'm new to potato growing, but just a thought.0

my dad used to grow potatoes accidentally in a dalek!
Any old or scabby spuds that went in there grew and produced a great crop so it would definately work for deliberatley planted spudsJust call me Nodwah the thread killer0
