Its funny someone should bring this up. When I was driving home yesterday I was behind two cars who appeared to be using their fog lights. Very strange indeed - clear night - not a patch of fog anywhere to be seen.

I find its mainly women who drive with fog lights on at wrong time.......Harsh but true;)

I followed them into the place they were going and told them, and they were doing a light check. No brakelights, no indicators, one sidelight that was incredibly dim, and if you happened to brake with that sidelight on, the indicator would light up.

Reminds me of one I was behind a year or two back. Every time he hit the brake pedal the reverse light came on while the brake lights glimmered very slightly. Imagine being stuck behind that van whilst stationary

As for fog lights, its not just the rear ones that are bad but the front ones are plain bloody dangerous on dark roads at night when they're coming at you.

We went out this evening to get some fuel and the fog light abusers were everywhere. Sure its mildly foggy but nothing like below 100m yet there they all are lighting up their cars like christmas trees.

I've only ever genuinely used my foglights twice and both times I wasn't sure whether to feel guilty for using them or pleased that i got to make use of them..

Why do drivers think they look cool with these fronts on? No-one knows who you are,
you can't see that they are on yourself as you drive so as far as you are concerned there is no difference
to the driving experience. Most people who do see you with them on think you are a !!!!!!.
I just don't understand the mentality of it?

I've had these very same thoughts so many times..

Perhaps they have not yet remembered to return their fog light switch to the off position since they used it a few days ago?
A lot of these I suspect... We've had misty mornings for a couple of days here - that's misty, not foggy and clearer evenings but there are plenty of people with rear fogs on in the evening. Notably the *%$* in the Sharalaxy in front of me last night in slow moving urban traffic; I could only tell he was braking by the third light coming on; the others were washed out by the rear fogs.

I tried flashing my front fogs a couple of times and I could see them reflecting off his rear bumper - so clearly visibility wasn't that bad...
I need to think of something new here...

Also Front fog lights must be on no matter what time of the day it is if you drive the following cars. BMW 3 series, Peugeot 306, 106, large 4 X4's that fat women take their fat kids to school in because they can't be bothered with the walk of 200 yds and any other car that people drive around with their seats reclined so far back they can hardly see out of the windscreen.

I drive a Peugeot 306 2.0 XSi 3dr Ph3 (2000 W Reg) and that has the nice round front fogs, and yes they do look rather nice on and yes the car is fast, but not a Ferrari obviously! :rotfl: Same performance and handling as a GTI-6 except for the 0-60 time being 1½ secs slower. Oh and as for straight line speed, who the hell has a 140mph+ drag race around urban streets? (well apart from chavs that is!).

Oh and no, I never drive around with my front fogs on to try and look big or get attention. Damn....does this officially mean I am sensible, courteous and boring?

(mobile phone) Needs to be hands-free, obviously. I expect SHIPSHAPE meant handheld.

No they need to !!!!!! :lipsrsealand put the bloody phone down and drive! You need your FULL attention on the road and your driving. Also the amount of pedestrians I should have mown down but chose to stop for instead, who have their head down, totally obsessed with some pointless crap text message from one of their dumb friends. They literally just walk across a main road of fast moving traffic, and expect all the cars to drive around them!

Oh and do not get me started on those loud mouthed idiots, who use their phones in queues or on public transport...

In the two videos you've posted links to, there are aspects of Strider's driving that appear to be different to what I'd do. His use of roundabouts (in terms of lane selection and signalling) isn't one of them.

Here's a question on roundabouts for you..... if you were close behind to a car in the outside lane, and you needed to exit but the car in front was not signalling. Do you (a) exit anyway, assuming they are in the left lane and therefore will take the same exit before you do, or (b) observe the fact they have not signalled to exit and may carry on around the roundabout, or (c) just go all the way around the roundabout yourself and wait for a safer chance to exit.

I have been in this situation many times, and have both suffered and benefited from those three options. I would like to know what people think, because previous friends of mine all have polarised views.

Assuming he has already passed one exit:
    Either
Speed up indicating left and exit, if you have plenty of room and time to do it.
    Or
Slow down sufficiently to be in a position to be able to brake if he cuts across you, and beep him after he does.

If this is his first exit and the lane markings allow him the benefit of the doubt that he may legitimatly pass this 1st exit.... Just drop back indicate left and exit behind him.
  • Well speeding up and taking a chance you will exit without a collision is very dicey. I personally now air on the side of caution and go around the roundabout for a safer chance to exit, and I will do this twice or more if necessary. The thing is when you enter a roundabout, you should not try to mind read what others will do, because I have done this before and had a collision. I have been both the driver in front and behind on separate occasions, the first time someone came from behind and tried to exit, taking me with them. On every occasion after this I have seen other drivers in front not exit when you might assume they should, and I ALWAYS now assume if they are not signalling they intend to carry on and sometimes this has been the case, thus saving me from another smash.
  • I'm a little puzzled by this roundabout thing. What does it matter what the car in front is doing and where he is going ???
You don't have to follow the car in front or overtake it. You use the correct lane and signal at the right time and take the exit you want.
