And the salt and pepper is 'free' in McDonalds!

Our chips come pre-salted here - so the salt is only free if you prise if off your order! :p That said, sometimes we get offered little tubs of sauce for no extra cost. So I guess you could count ketchup as free if you could work that into a meal!

I suspect the point of the challenge is to make a meal for less than 7.5p, based on buying things at full price, rather than getting yellow stickered items or growing your own. Certainly makes it harder coming up with something filling that way!
  • Nettle soup.......nettles = free / 1 veg stock cube 4.08p (B&M) splash milk 0.025p Total 4.1p

I have just read on the BBC site that the cheapest meal is a 'toast sandwich' which has been costed out at 7.5p.Literally three slices of bread two buttered and the one as the 'filling ' toasted. It is supposed to be sufficient for a lunch at 330 calories. Are times really going to get that bad.we seem to be reverting to the 'depression' of the 1930s:eek: I think the day I start eating toast sandwiches I think I'll just turn up my toes  What can you all come up with as cheap as that
Although as a child 'conny-onny' sandwiches were made from condensed milk on bread Ruined the teeth but filled you up:)

Things aren't brilliant out there, even if some people and businesses are making money. It's certainly not filtering down to the rest of us, that's for sure. As an aside, from January, my husband's hours will be cut in half because his employer has realised that it is cheaper for them to employ two part-timers than one full timer. Their employer's NIC will be lower. Since DH hasn't been there a year, he has few employment rights.

But back to the topic in hand, when I watched the BBC news clip about Toast Sandwiches my first thought was Marmite on toast had to be healthier and cheaper. When I was a broke student, that was one option. Another was pot-noodle-type stuff heated on the stove with an egg stirred in and, maybe, some frozen peas or sweetcorn (if we were feeling really flush, we'd add half a tin of tuna).

A baked potato with an ounce of grated cheese over the top must come in somewhere around 20p and would still have more nutrition than a toast sandwich.

you could do what that bloke done -and get somewhere to stay too
A HOMELESS man in Golspie made repeated 999 calls to the ambulance service, then pretended to a doctor he was having chest pains so he could get admitted to hospital for food and accommodation, Tain Sheriff Court has heard.
the funny thing is he was sent to jail (free food and accommodation 4 months worth.).

havent you got a tescos or morrisons?

Morrisons is 150 mile round trip, tesco 70 - and then it's not a huge one. We have a small co-op and a few local shops. Have to say I make most of my own, it's cheaper, and nicer, that way.

How sad that you would pretend to be ill just to get room and food - shows how desperate some folks are.

I'm confused, why a toast sandwich? why not just 3 slices of toast?
    Slightly bitter
  • I read this, and purely out of interest, I found myself having to try it. So earlier today, I made myself a 'toast sandwich' with salt and pepper as suggested. Iif it wasn't for the salt and pepper, it'd have no flavour whatsoever, and it's unlikely I'll try it again. So much for being 'healthy' as they seem to claim. There are plenty of other ridiculously cheap foods though. I get a 1kg bag of oats for 75p at Asda which makes porridge for breakfast and lasts over a week. Rice is only about 40p for a big bag of a value brand and again, lasts for ages...

Should also add that even for me, it wasn't a sufficient lunch, and I'm really skinny and don't think of myself as someone who eats a lot.
