  • it's not wonder we're always broke - bread here is a minimum of £1 a loaf - nearer £1.50 as the "cheaper" stuff goes quickly, and isn't here every day. I can't even make it for that price

or a lidl for cheap bread flour, a homemade loaf costs me about 30p to make (or even less since i'm still using up flour i got on dtd)
    DEC GC £463.67/£450
    EF- £110/COLOR]/£1000
  • I was watching the BBC news channel and they came up with an article that the cheapest lunch was two bits of bread with a bit of toast in the middle.
That may be cheap, but not in my opinion very good for you

My cheapest lunch is homemade soup, made from leftover veg and if I have none of these then a couple of boiled eggs.( free from my hens)

Apparently the bread with toast costs 7p.

Can you better this but with a proper lunch?

Growing your own is cheaper? Welll......sometimes, maybe, if you've got a garden already and the basic tools. Otherwise if you get an allotment you've got the cost of rental, fertilizer/manure, more tools, shed possibly, seeds, nets, supports, string etc. I've found most of the hard landscaping materials for my allotment in skips, make compost, recycle everything possible and even make my plant labels out of milk bottles but I still spend about £200 per year on the allotment.

Then I stop in at Tesco on the way home for milk and spot the bags of whoopsied spuds at 10p, or the value carrots and I ask myself if the allotment really saves me money? And that's without adding in anything at all for my time which can be 10-12 hours per week in summer, easily.

Nope, unless you've got plenty of spare time and plan to cultivate intensively, don't go in for an allotment. Dig up the garden first. No rent, no travel expenses and you can do it in dribs and drabs.

vakue bread is 47p i think and tesco own bread which is ehat we have if theres no reduced bread is 55p, i only pay £1 for bread if i run out and i'm avoiding the sm so go to the filling station

The brand that Lidl sell costs around 47 or 48p too and is very nice. Sainsbury's basics bread costs around the same price and is also nice, but the slices are really thin.

These are London prices too, so may be a few pennies cheaper elsewhere.
