  • NatWest customer service - ho ho ho. Wasn't aware they provided any....

Seriously - have been awful on several occasions in more than 1 branch with me. This thread shows how many of us have had problems with a Natwest savings account.

Im glad I could bring it up, this site is useful for so many things, and thanks to feedback Im not going with Natwest. Halifax is the next bank im looking at, maybe HSBC too aince I already have an account that is with them but it is suspended because I havent used it for 4 years because they used mastercard and I prefered VISA at the time because its supported in more places around the world that i was traveling at the time.

HSBC have the dreaded 'Security Key' which seems worse than 'Pin Sentry' as each device is dedicated to each customer. You can't borrow a friends device if yours has stopped working or you forgot it.

Halifax let you go about your business without any extra devices, and giving you a ring on a landline or mobile should they want extra security (eg. adding payees) plus don't forget the free fivers!

I really would like to go with First Direct, they're a good bank, but I don't earn more than £1,000 a month let alone £1,500. If I can rule Natwest out then for customer service, I want a bank that has easy internet banking (one that I don't have to remember a ridiculous 13 digit customer banking number along with other passwords (HSBC) The only other bank I can think of to hand is Halifax/RBS that have branches in most towns/cities. I don't really want a small bank with limited branches unless they really are very good.
Just open an eSaver with them and put £1 in it and then you don't need to deposit the £1500.

To get the £1500 you can just pay £500 three times in - 3 in and 3 out from your old account, when you open the 1st account it will ask you if you want to open an eSaver account with it - so they can both be done in one application.

Personally I would recommend HSBC all day long. The on line and in branch service is extremely good. The in branch service is enhanced by the express banking machines which allow you to do most things which internet banking offer just by inserting your card in the machine (PIN required). The automated paying in machines are very good and credit your account instantly.

You mention the secure key. It is a great device and makes the account so secure. If for example you are abroad and want to use an internet cafe for banking it would not matter if there was key logging software or other malware on the computer.

Whether we like it or not secure key type devices will eventually become the norm. So far the secure key has been fool proof. People who avoid or leave HSBC because they dislike the secure key are more than likely just delaying the inevitable. We should be happy that at last there appears to be something which for the time being at least has sounded the death knell for account hacking.

  • I think it would be great if banks could release figures of how many numpty customers they have :rotfl:

Then they will loose money because we would sue them and they can't under the data protection act.

I much prefer using the card reader than having the intrusion of a phone call.
