OK. I'll give you an example. The only time I've used that it was 11pm at night and the children were asleep. I don't get a mobile phone signal inside the house and would have had to use the landline which would have potentially woken the children.

    I'd call that intrusive.

Personally I would recommend HSBC all day long. The on line and in branch service is extremely good. The in branch service is enhanced by the express banking machines which allow you to do most things which internet banking offer just by inserting your card in the machine (PIN required). The automated paying in machines are very good and credit your account instantly.

You mention the secure key. It is a great device and makes the account so secure. If for example you are abroad and want to use an internet cafe for banking it would not matter if there was key logging software or other malware on the computer.

Whether we like it or not secure key type devices will eventually become the norm. So far the secure key has been fool proof. People who avoid or leave HSBC because they dislike the secure key are more than likely just delaying the inevitable. We should be happy that at last there appears to be something which for the time being at least has sounded the death knell for account hacking.

No, I think HSBC Just have a very poor implementation of it. Natwest for example only require use of their card reader when adding new Payees and other potentially fraudulent activities. When simply checking balance, paying existing payees or transferring money between your own accounts no device authorisation is needed. This provides a good balance between security and convenience imho.

I left Halifax for NatWest and I can assure you the customer service with NatWest is far superior to that of the Halifax. On the whole banking with the NatWest is great, not saying its the mecca of banks, but we have never had any real problems.
