( or potentially a very old classic that was supposed to run on leaded 4-star ???? )

Used to work in a station 70's and we had a 5* pump too for the sporty ones.

Erm... Interesting. I use my card every week, not heard anything like this. I fill up £25 every 2-3 days to grab the free coffee! Lol! (18 litres?) and I still get the points. I filled up 5 litres into a gas tank the other day for my little brothers mini motor thingymajic, and I still got my points :) (just checked online.)

I should have made it clear I was referring to the bonus vouchers they send out every three months or so to get bonus points. They usually have a stipulation that you must purchase a minimum of 25 litres to be able to use them.

Diesel needs more refining nowadays to meet the emissions requirements (ultra low sulphur) which adds to the cost. The other is the higher demand for diesel nowadays which has pushed the cost up.

Tax man has raised the proportion of duty on it as well. They are aware that in relative terms less total fuel is being sold due to increased MPG and they were losing revenue.

I noticed last week that there was an 8p differential between diesel and petrol 130/138 in our closest big town. Don't know if it was just a timing thing or a sign of things to come. If it isn't the Yanks with their driving season its Yanks wanting heating oil;)

The duty on diesel in the UK is the same as petrol at 57.95 pence per litre (as at 23rd March 2011), so that is not a factor. The recent reduction in the price of 2p per litre has only applied to unleaded and not to diesel, which has increased the differential in my area to 8p per litre.

Its not just the Americans with their demand for heating oil in the winter but also in Europe as well.

Scotland is served by the BP refinery at Grangemouth so no matter who you buy your fuel from in Scotland, its come from BP

I hear this a lot but it's not quite true. I believe many fuels are transfered at Grangemouth but not refined there, but in any case Stanlow also serves Scotland from what I remember. Used to be a regular ship to Clydebank Oil Terminal which was used for Greenergy to supply the fuel from there.

Thanks for clarity on the duty, perhaps I am thinking diesel used to be at a lower rate and it was brought into line? On the basis that for any given quantity of oil a similar proportion of petrol/dieselis produced then whilst I accept the demand may change for diesel/heating cycles that 4p or 8p a litre is a hefty mark up the 60p "fuel cost" for additional refining. Any idea what the refining cost is within that 60p?

My point really is that there is always demand for fuel, and the cycles are known. I am sure the brokers don't miss out on the chance to play the market and skim a little more.

So using your logic, why is diesel cheaper in mainland Europe than standard unleaded petrol?
I would suggest that the government has encouraged the price rise because of the increased number of diesel vehicles on the road.
This has nothing to do with technology, but everything to do with greed by the oil companies (increased profits) and the government (increased prices equal increased taxation).

I've noticed this as well - diesel always used to be cheaper than petrol, and still is in the rest of Europe.

The worst thing about this - it's extremely annoying for those of us with diesel cars, but it must impact on the cost of everything for all of us. Think of the lorries, trains and ships that transport goods around the country and around the world. They all run on diesel. So if Tesco's transportation costs go up, they have to increase the retail price of those goods to cover it. So pretty much anything you buy in any shop is more expensive than it would be if the price of diesel was lower. Quite apart from things like haulage firms, courier firms, post office, etc etc. I reckon if the government reduced the price of diesel it would help the whole economy.

Prepared to be flamed for talking complete rubbish ;)
