Supermarket Vs Branded fuel

I know this will all be about opinions but does anyone know if any actual tests or proof has been done into this.

Ive always used supermarket but only done been doing 8-10k per year recently, however due to a new work location Im now looking at doing 25-30k.

Therefore I want to know am I better paying 1.36 for Asda or Morrisons diesel or 1.38 for shell/esso etc.

I pass then all in a day so convenience isnt an issue.

I drive a 58' Laguna 1.5 dci which I can already get around 65mpg on a motorway run but any further savings would be nice!

Thanks

    Shell V-Power FTW!

I've been experimenting with fuels for a few months now, so I have first hand experiance from behind the wheel. So some sound advice... Don't use Shell's new Fuel Save stuff. If you can still find their regular fuel in stations, then by all means, use it, but I'm pretty sure they've all been phased out. (sadly.) The new Fuel Save crap is horrible for my car! Not just opinion, a lot of people have complained about it.

I stay away from supermarket fuel. Never have, never will I touch it. Put it this way, Shell V-Power only costs around £3.50 more PER TANK. Don't smoke cigarettes the day you fill up and you won't notice the difference, yet you get the best of the best fuel has to offer.

V-Power all the way for me, only costs 5p a litre more! Plus, Shell has a Drivers Club Card which gets automatically upgraded to V-Power Card if you fill up more then 200 litres (within 4 months) which is easily done if you cover 20-30k. They send me £5 every 200 litres of V-Power, plus, for every £25 I fill up, I get a free coffee! So instead of tanking up full, I just fill up £25 and grab me a free £2 coffee, (cheapskate, I know! People are surprised when I tell them I'm not Jewish!) :D which means cost wise, it turns out cheaper then supermarket stuff. (if you buy coffee every morning.)

Erm, by your own figures above you would be better off by 2p per litre when using supermarket fuel.
  • The point being is will I get sufficiently higher mpg with a brand to justify the increase cost of the fuel. If you get the same mpg then obviously supermarket fuel is best!

The differential is often more than 5p per litre.

When I used the V-power I didn't notice any discernible improvement in the performance of my motorcycle not an improvement in fuel economy and I concluded the extra cost wasn't worthwhile.

As for the drivers club, Shell have cut the benefits right down compared to what you used to get and with the vouchers you have to put a minimum of 25 litres in to get the extra points. On most motorcycles the petrol tank doesn't even hold 25 litres, so is of no benefit there.

Erm... Interesting. I use my card every week, not heard anything like this. I fill up £25 every 2-3 days to grab the free coffee! Lol! (18 litres?) and I still get the points. I filled up 5 litres into a gas tank the other day for my little brothers mini motor thingymajic, and I still got my points :) (just checked online.)

But if you're doing 30,000 miles a year, then surely quality fuel would be a priority over cheap supermarket stuff? Why does nobody ever account for the future... V-Power is the cleanest, finest, engine friendly fuel on the market. When compared even with BP Ultimate, V-Power contains 50% less sulfur then Ultimate. God knows what the figures are for supermarket junk.

Over a prolonged period, cheap fuel will show it's effects. End of story.

I know, in my post I pointed out to the OP to stay CLEAR of Fuel Save. That fuel is pure junk, period.

There are numerous threads on here about same subject.

Many who purport to know, tanker drivers for instance say there is no difference in the fuel. There may be some difference in "additive" but not likely to make a vast difference.

There are strict EU guidelines on fuel specification and tolerances which are monitored cetane, sulphur content and the like.

Many of the supermarket retailers are now the bulk retailers anyway. It certainly wouldn't be in their interests to peddle substandard product.

I do have a friend who owns a maintenance garage who say he notices "fuel" associated issues from one supermarket but as it is bang on his patch and he has mainly local trade that is not surprising.

Driving style, high speed, type of journey etc will make a bigger dent as will the advent of winter, which seems to have a bigger impact on diesels IME.

I will try and find an example link.

If a brand is willing to give away stuff to encourage you then their stuff is over priced.
