Hi all. I am currently RAGING with anger and upset so I hope you dont mind me ranting here. My 14 year old DD went off to a sleepover last night and while she was there she posted a picture on FB of her "overnight kit" which consisted of two cans of coke (I gave her) a hairdye (i bought her and said her friend could dye her hair) and a flask. I immediately went on FB and asked what the flask was for but deleted it as I had an inkling..........fast forward to her coming home and immediately asking f she could go to the park to meet some "friends" dunno about where yoy are but here in the South West it is peeing down and FREEZING. I said n and who are you meeting and it was "boys- friends of friends" we said no she cant go so shes in full sulk when I asked why she'd taken the babys flask out for the night. She flew out of the room, grabbed her back and legged it upstairs. Husband gave chase, got the flask off her and BINGO. RUM. RUM!!!!!!!!!! OUR RUM that she has STOLEN aged 14. She shot off and locked self in bathroom and we made her come down and face us. She swears blind they didnt drink it and I THINK she was just trying to big herself up to her friends. I am totally devestated and in a purely selfish manner I feel like it reflects really badly on me as a parent. I think Ive screwed up totally and it just brings home the fact that I really dont feel old enough to be parenting a teen. I am 35 BTW. I also split up with her biological dad when she was TINY (a matter of months old) and shes had very little contact with him her whole life. No financial support at all. My husband has bought her up since we got together when she was just 2 and is 100% a father to her- in fact our other kids (8,6 &3) dont even KNOW she has a different biological dad- its just not relevant. Earlier this year she threw "Youre not my dad" at husband in a row but to be honest that had been expected and we were surprised it took as long as it did.
Anyway I feel bad cos we are drinkers- not stupidly so - but we regularly have wine with meals/of an evening, we have friends coming for NYE and Ive been stockpiling Cava etc. Have we normalised it too much? She has a friend whos mum regualrly allows them an alcopop at her house and we have actually stopped her going there recently becuase of this drinking suddenly semmingly acceptable in her peer group
Sorry Im rambling now but I didnt know where to turn- I dont want to tell my mum as she is VERY opinionated (undertstatement) and I feel like she would just rile me too much! ANy ideas/advice? Im sorry its completely off topic but it is slightly relevant because all I want to do now is go to the sales and spend the pain away........Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.

Idris... it is not a failure on you as a parent. Your DD is simply at an age where she wants to experiment... ok, so she shouldn't have stolen the rum from you but maybe have a chat with her and explain you aren't upset that she wanted to try alcohol but you are upset and disappointed that she felt it was ok to steal from you. It's back to that old thing of she will be trying lots of stuff that you don't particularly want to but is it better to know about it or for her to do it behind your back?
It wasn't so long ago I was lying to my mum about where me and two of my friends were going, we said it was an underage disco but we went to the offy and roamed the streets downing hooch and 20/20... I was only 14 or 15 at the time and we got caught because my mum had turned up at the disco to give me taxi money!
I hope I haven't made you more angry in my response, I just think that it might be better to know what she is up to and allow it to a limited extent rather than her rebelling and doing everything to excess which is what will happen if you ban her completely. Give her a small wine spritzer with dinner or something and make it out to be a special treat.. that way she learns that it is something to be had on special occassions.
Sending you a big hug xxBecame Mrs Scotland 16.01.16Became homeowners 26.02.16

THanks psycho- I totally agree with what your saying- my mum was very strict and I lasted until I was 17, then rebelled and left home and lived in squats etc until I was 20 and I got pregnant so I TOTALLY can see that school of thought! However we have allowed her a drink- we went to Dawlish in April with another family and let DD and friends son (same age) a bit of cider while they babysat for us, shes allowed a bit of an alcopop at weddings/parties etc. I just feel like its my fault. I have threatened to tell the other girls mum (whos house they were at) and have taken phone/ipod etc of DD so she cant woe is me all over FB. says me who's just posted "I dont want to be a parent anymore- where do I tender my resignation" as my FB status LOL- oh the irony.
She is VERY VERY contrite and ashamed and embarrassed. I know its the start of all this teenage stuff- the advantage of being a younger parent is that I can remember being a teenager!! However its all so different now with FB etc.Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful.
