You can spend hrs days weeks messing about with progs and uninstalling. If you have no data on there then do a reinstall it will clear any issues and if there still are issues you have a bigger problem.
people say it is last resort but i generally do it as first resort.

without the disks you will have use backup partition

While you should have a set of recovery disks for your Sony computer, you can actually use that recovery partition to restore your computer to factory condition.
    • Power on the computer and press F10 several times.
    • Choose Start Recovery Wizard
    • Follow the onscreen prompts.

Office is an added program, so yes you should be able to remove it.
Just make sure you have the discs/serial number just in case you need to put it back on.

Download a CPU temp monitoring utility ("realtemp" google first result - takes 20 seconds) - old laptops are very prone to overheating especially with poor ventilation, and they will often do CPU throttling to cool down, and can even force shut down to prevent permanent damage. My old laptop went into the high 80s and that really started to mess with the fan bearings after a while - which might explain that noise you're hearing.

Edit- to stop Windows defender, you can disable it on start-up using the Ccleaner utility.

it is very unlikely to be office or any other installed progs, though not impossible.
If you do a system restore then you will need to make sure you get windows updates and antivirus before anything else.
For downloadable safe progs go here - https://www.filehippo.com
you will also get firefox there as well.
    best of luck!

what should I be expecting the temp to be then?

If there is a system fault it could cause excessive cpu usage which will make the system hot. Also an overworked harddrive will alao get hot.

'speccy' is a good monitor prog (available from filehippo ) it will show red if too hot.
when installing progs never accept the toolbars & other progs offered, they are installed by default so make sure they are unticked.

Above 70 is pushing it a little, above 80 for extended periods will probably degrade the lifespan, and above 90 you're probably going to start getting forced shut downs. Ideally you want no higher than 75 under constant 100% load.
