A factory restore is always a last resort.
I'm no teche (read my signature), but you seem to have a lot of things running at startup you don't need (Adobe and a few others).
Have you run a MalWarebytes full scan? If not, make sure the database is up to date and run a full scan and post the log on here.

Also, your Firefox is very out of date. It's just been updated to version 8, but it may be best to leave that until the problem is fixed.

so many things could have gone wrong, is it getting too hot? Air channels clear of dust? Are you using the laptop where air can get to it ie not on the bed sunk into a duvet.
As the hard drive is the most likely componant to fail I aqlways look there first and then continue into other componants if i find it is ok.
    Unlikely to be daughter!
now you mention it, it has ALWAYS been hot since I got it

but I do let the air get to it as best I can

even when I used to use it on a bit of board, it still felt hot?

I am never sure what I can disable at start up, so any help in that direction would be fab

I am running a full malware scan just now, seem to be taking a lot longer these days than they used to?

Pretty sure I updated my firefox this morning. I got a message about it, to update to v8 so I did, been on the beta testing one for months now??

Then clean the fan area-the manual will show you how. It's probably choked with dust and fluff.

I will get right on it

I am totally confused about why my Firefox is SO out of date though?

It shouldnt be, I have updated it every time I have had notification of a new version?

You also appear to be running 2 anti-virus programs (Avast and Windows Defender). You need to pick one of them and get rid of the other. having two installed will seriously affect the speed your machine works at.
