  • With all due respect, your 'joke' is lost on me! Would you like me to supply you with a serial number so you can indeed make checks of your own.

I do not consider that I am being unreasonable when asking for help in trying to avoid a download time of between 18 and 24 hours and establishing whether what I have in my possession is of use.

Forgive me if I have not used the correct terminology in my posts.

I am just asking for help - not to be berated as to the legitimacy of my software.

I want to determine whether this laptop is worth saving and have a slight indication of what the problem is before I try to find a repair centre of repute!
Easy , the "joke" wasn't I was pointing out that most new windows 7 installs ask you to create a backup and a repair disk, I was pointing out to TakeThis that was perhaps what your disks were. The joke part was about me not doing it when I installed my own copy. A lot of machines come with Windows already installed and often don't even come with disks. I am sorry if my post has offended but it was not meant to :o

I think that you are jumping to a fair few conclusions here.

Toshiba expects you to create Recovery Discs from their Recovery Partition when you start the machine.
So those could be the unlabelled discs to which he refers.
The problem is that you have asked for a solution, but appear to be baulking at doing what is necessary.
So we need to be sure that your alternative is an adulterated disc, otherwise we are wasting our time.

We also need to be sure that you are giving the correct information, so that we can give you the correct information.

So if you have a clean Windows 7 Professional disc, perhaps you can get started with that, so that we can progress this case.

We work by process of elimination. But we can do nothing if you do nothing.
  • See if you can get the repair disk to load, (but don't do anything just yet) you may have to press a Function key on the lappy to get it to load from the cd I will look for tosh instructions in a mo.

That was my initial thought because it was a damn good slam. I don't have enough practical knowledge and wanted to investigate the problems myself before going to try and get it fixed. I have been going around the tinternet in circle trying to diagnose the fault but with no real luck basically so we could decide to repair. How can I check that it is the hard drive?

The laptop is getting through the BIOS(?) stage and gets to windows and then hangs.

    Sorry for not answering earlier.

When you start the computer, press f8. It will bring up a start menu. Try Safe Mode first. If that works, then go to programs, accessories, command prompt. At the prompt type chkdsk c: and then hit return. It'll check the hard drive for errors.

If that doesn't work, boot from a Windows installation DVD, select "Repair Computer" and then command prompt and follow above.

OP, you could always download 'Hirens boot CD'. This has a series of utilities that allow you to copy files to external devices and run Hard Disc tests.

As you have a set of 3 discs, one of which is a 'Repair and Recovery CD', this can be used to check and repair your Windows install. Use wisely.
