You can probably save everything on the hard drive, either by taking it out and putting it into a caddy or by using a Live CD.
Following my instructions will not erase any of your pictures or music, so you can try it first.0 -
I have been searching for the disks I had when we installed Windows 7 and found my Windows 7 installation disk - Image Disk and also Recovery disk!
Once again I really appreciate the time and effort being given.:D0 -

Am I wrong in thinking that as we made an image disk when we installed I can use this albeit without SP1? If my thought process is going in the wrong direction ie this is not possible as I need to use an image disk with SP1 in order to match what my laptop has at the moment, forgive me. Just an idiot question!0

When you power on does it go straight to the windows screen? If you power off manually (using the button) it would usually give you an option to run windows in safe mode, or select recovery options..
I'm curious what damage could be done- was the laptop on when the lid was slammed? That could certainly damage a spinning hard drive but the fact that you're even managing to reach a windows screen suggests the disk is at least partly bootable.0 -

From whence did your 'image disc' come?0 -

You've corrupted data on the hard drive or physically damaged it. They don't like impacts.
Bad news is that if you've damaged it, there is a serious worldwide shortage and prices have doubled and trebled.0
