It's that time of year again, the time when we all need to start thinking ahead into the new year and how we are going to tackle any debts, generate extra income and squirrel away some savings.

Please take the time to read posts 1 and 2 in full and check out the HANDY LINKS section. This helps to avoid repeat posts clogging up this very fast-moving thread.

With so many people in this challenge and this being only one version of it, it's very difficult to keep up with everyone, so don't be shy - to have your name added to the challenger list, or if there's something you'd like to ask, send Frugaldom a private message.

NB: THIS IS AN ADAPTED VERSION OF THE ORIGINAL CHALLENGE, SPECIFICALLY FOR MSE FORUM USERS

This is an adaptation of Frugaldom's 'Living on £4,000 for a Year' challenge. It has been running here on MSE for the past 4 years, but the actual challenge began several years previously, elsewhere. It has seen many changes over the years, so this version is a catalogue of diaries charting the progress of 'debt free wannabe' money savers.

Your budget is personal to you, it should fit with your personal financial situation.

Some have achieved their debt free status and now follow frugal lifestyles in order to stay debt free. Others are still pursuing that dream. Whichever stage you are at, feel free to join us for 2012 and share your journey as you give debts the heave-ho once and for all.

This challenge is about living a frugal lifestyle - establishing your true cost of living, sticking to your budget, clearing any debts and making savings wherever and however you can to enable you to live the life you really want.

Frugal living isn't for everyone, but everyone is welcome to join us. Methods employed by our merry band of frugalers include batch cooking, stockpiling, preserving, foraging, mending, shopping in charity shops, reducing, reusing, recycling, Local Exchange Trading Schemes (LETS), Vegetable and fruit growing, allotments, keeping hens, using cashback sites and earning whatever it takes to become self sufficient in managing the cost of living without incurring debt.

For some it is initially about clearing debt, for others it's about increasing savings, buying property, becoming stay at home mums or paying off the mortgage early. Some choose the lifestyle on ethical grounds. Above all, this is a fun and supportive way to manage your budget so you have control of your own cost of living. It's about NEEDS and not WANTS.

Monitoring and revising the budget is part of frugal living plan. Gifts & cards could all to be homemade, livestock needs to pay its own keep, anything else needs to be cash neutral.

Hi Tumpty, thanks for joining. I always found it easier to deal with who was doing what during the November/December period, it gives us all more time to plan ahead and wrap up any loose ends from the current year.

I'm expecting to see 'slowlyfading' along shortly, as she has offered to keep tabs on the challenge on here for 2012.

Good luck for your next challenge, any ideas what your wannabe debt-free goals will be? (Mine's to renovate the house without incurring any debt.)

My goal for next year is to get an accountant. I'm self employed and not claiming half the expenses I could. I've booked into talk to someone in early December and I'm hoping they can make life much easier for me.

Frugal living isn't exactly my cup of tea because I like paying for my luxuries.
However, I am a DFW and would like to be part of a group that might help me to focus on my spending in general, even if I am not as good with it as you lot sound!
Anything that will help me save some money that can go towards my mortgage OPs will be a good thing...

Hi SF, hope I didn't drag you from your sickbed this morning. I have added in the names that are beginning to appear, so welcome to Kerry Woman, Catslovelycats and Choc-addict.

This is an introductory thread so that we're organised for 2012, so there's plenty of time to get in some practice. It's about affording to live life the way you want to, free from acursed debts. After debt has gone, it's our money, our life, so let's start living it as soon as we can. :beer:
