Live on £4,000 for a Year - 2009 Challenge
Part 2, April - June 2009
Part 1 - January to March 2009
Part 1 - January to March 2008
Part 2 - April to June 2008
Part 3 - July to September 2008
Part 4 - October to December 2008
====================================
Please read the MSE forum rules and help us to keep this challenge on track, thank you.
If you have any questions about this challenge, feel free to PM me.
The following is taken from the official MSE forum rules section:
KEEPING THREADS ON-TOPIC
Please try not to take threads off-topic. This can be confusing for new users and makes it especially difficult for people ... Where requests from Board Guides for threads to be brought back on track have not been followed off-topic posts may be removed. We encourage community, but not thread derailment.
Please bear in mind the main purpose of the site is to save money. The forum team has therefore been instructed to prioritise its time on the MoneySaving forums.
KEEPING TOPICS RELEVANT TO THE BOARD
There are two boards provided for off-topic chat and discussion. The MoneySavers Arms has been set up for fun, more lighter-hearted chat (although do still remember this is a family forum – keep it clean please). Discussion Time is for discussion of current issues (read Martin’s description).
If you post a topic that does not relate to the board it’s posted on it will be moved to a more relevant MoneySaving board or to Discussion Time/The MoneySavers Arms.
===================================
This challenge is about paying for needs so we can afford to pay debts and save for wants. It runs from 1st January to 31st December 2009. The links will give you an idea of how the 2008 challenge went.
To help work out your personal budget amount, you can try the following method:
1. Add up entire annual income, all sources
2. Deduct entire year's rent or mortgage payments
3. Deduct the entire year's Council Tax & water
4. Deduct essential annual property insurance and maintenance fees if relevant,
5. Deduct ALL costs associated with work (travel, childcare, lunches)
6. Deduct ALL regular debt repayments
7. Deduct annual essential health-related costs
The amount you have left should be your disposable income to cover the cost of living plus all other extras & savings. The following is my £4,000 budget for Q2 of 2009. Please note that slight alterations are made according to inflation and price fluctuations, such as energy prices.
Groceries - £1,200 (includes food for 3 adults, toiletries, cleaning & laundry products)
Electricity - £1,200
Coal - £240
Logs - £240
Internet - £240
Mobiles - £40
Telephone - £160
Clothing & Footwear - £100
Gifts etc - £350
Extras - £20
Essential travel - £150
Insurance - £50
Misc - £10
Total = £4,000
The above are all basics plus things I choose to include within my £4,000 budget. Some people may choose not to have TV, telephones or Internet at home, as they are not essential. How you prepare your 2009 budget is up to you. Whatever you include in this challenge, the choice is yours. 2009 will be my 3rd year on a budget of £4,000 and I have no intentions of heading back down the road to debt. Feel free to join us all here on our frugal adventures, where every little really does help.
There have been many different variations introduced by different people according to their individual lifestyles, so I will not be including individual challenge amounts in the 2009 list.
Anyone is welcome to join in at any time as this challenge is mainly about household budgets with regards to the cost of living. Frugality is our watchword. Welcome to Frugaldom.

Please note that there are NO challenger numbers for 2009, any numbers that may appear here are for the purposes of counting how many people we have participating. The list will be kept in alphabetical order to make it quicker for finding names. This is the list from January 2009, many names have, since, disappeared but there are many who have been here since the start of January 2008, so there's always someone around to answer any questions- *Mari*

Frugal living challenge - living on little in 2025 while frugalling towards retirement.0 -
Hello:hello:
I sneaked this new thread on while nobody was looking. The old thread will be closed very soon, but each is linked up to the other, so no reason for getting lost.
Newcomers always welcome and the list of challengers is in alphabetical order this year, so there are no numbers associated with the names.I reserve the right not to spend.
The less I spend, the more I can afford.

Just popped in to say hello!! caught the link on the first quarters thread. My self & hubby; 2 sons (30 & 26). Hubby also a found daughter (37).
Eldest son has his own house with partner & her 2 children (11 & 10)
Youngest son & fiancé now have own house.
So we’re empty nesters.
Daughter married with 3 boys (12, 9 & 5).
My mother always served up leftovers we never knew what the original meal was. - Tracey Ulman0 -

Logs - £80/£240
Internet - ££59.97/£240

Insurance - £47.50/£47.50
Contingency - £0/£104.50
Total spent during first quarter = £1,190.65
Balance remaining for remainder of 2009 = £2,809.35
Over average by £190.65 to reflect extra costs of electricity, coal and logs for winter heating.
On my cash neutral mini-challenge for all other spending, including on DD's wedding plans, I have spent a grand total of £890.47 and recouped £453.93 of that so far. If I can neutralise all the extra spending during 2009 then I'd have met another of my targets!
Welcome to the thread, Kindofagilr. Setting your budget is a bit of an eye-opener for most people when they find out just how much goes on non-essentials. LOL You'll soon get the hang of it and have your debts paid and ISA filled. New thread started for part 2 here, nobody's noticed it yet
Thank you
I think its insane lol, I cant believe how much money we waste!
I will def start doing this once we are in the house for a few months and know how much bills are etc
I may be able to join in on the 1st July if thats ok? second half of the yearthen do the full one from 2010

New thread
thanks, nyk.
My free haircut yesterday was brilliant - I'm really happy with it! I tipped the stylist £4 so now I have an extra £21 to play with since I've saved that amount on my hairdressing budget, which was originally £25

Can I join in? Am I right that it's not so much a £4k challenge this year as a budget-tight-and-stick-to-it? Can I join with a single figure for everything except mortgage, rates and insurance? (If so, I'm going for £700/month for a family of eight.)0

Oh my gosh Part 2 already - where does time go?Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck

:hello: Hiya kindofagilr and blueberrypie! Welcome to the challenge!
Blueberrypie - I don't see why not... there are quite a few of us on differing budgets for a whole heap of differing reasons! I'm going for a 5k challenge - but that only covers the bits I can work on/ lower/adjust/look for better deals/ aren't necessary but I would like to stick to a budget on. I found an all in budget (~11.5k) depressing to see every day (mainly due to cursing getting a fixed rate mortgage instead of a tracker - I would be saving ~£170pcm+ had I chosen to go for that.)!Everyone is different!
I dare say Nyk will be along shortly to add you to the list... :T You do realise there is no escape from frugalitis don't you... :rotfl: Its very contagious...:T
