Usually until I can't stand it any longer :rotfl: but 8:30 at the very latest. Tonight he asked to go to bed at 7pm. He's 7.

ASKED to go to bed????? Bloomin' Heck! Mine has NEVER done that and is just 7yrs!
Baldrick, does it have to be this way? Our valued friendship ending with me cutting you up into strips and telling the prince that you walked over a very sharp cattle grid in an extremely heavy hat?

If kids are a young school age, say up to 11, i feel 9pm is too late. If my 11 year old daughter went to be at 9pm she's be cranky as hell the next day. She usually goes upstairs about 7.30 and is asleep before 8 most nights, some nights she asks to go up earlier. I don't argue ! Weekends she goes to bed when she likes but is usually flagging by 9.30pm. I certainly wouldn't let kids set their own bedtime !
  • I have a 7 and 9 year old and their bedtime is 8pm during the week and they wake up anywhere from 6:30am to 7am and usually Saturday we allow them to stay up until 9pm if we don't have anything to do the following day as they know it's a special weekend treat.

Different children need different amounts of sleep, and it will also vary by age. My 6 year old seems to need almost 11 hours of sleep, and without it he is tearful, clumsy and annoying the next day. His friends have later bedtimes or they stay up til past midnight at family parties, on holiday etc. but I can't do it with mine because it's not fair on him, he is such a mess the next day, it would be cruel if I made him stay awake just because I wanted to stay out longer.

He wakes at 7:30 regardless, so no lie-ins for me :( He quickly adjusts to the clocks changing, so that he gets up at the new 7:30 am.

Both of mine have been happier with a regular bedtime that doesn't get changed by more than an hour on weekends. Other kids - my nephews for example, cope fine with alter nights on weekends, very late nights on holiday etc. and they fuinction normally the following day.

He's been up since 4am!!! He goes to bed without whinging and sleeps straight away, but no matter what I give him for dinner he usually wakes around 6am. Today was an exception - he was hungry and I think he's growing again....
  • Mine have set bedtimes through the week. The two youngest 6 and 8 go to bed at 7pm and 7.30pm, DD 14 goes to bed between 9.30-10pm. Friday nights they stay up as late as they want, which is normally no later than 10pm for the younger two, and about 11.30 for the eldest. Saturday night they get about an extra half hour on their normal bedtimes, back to routine Sunday night.

People have suggested that I keep my son up later so he will sleep later in the morning. He doesn't - he gets up just as early and then he's nasty all day because he hasn't had enough sleep.
  • my 2 are in bed by 7.30 at the latest even on the weekends. ive tried keeping them up later so i get a lie in but thats a non-starter always! often i have to wake them up at 8am for school at 9! they are 2 and 5 btw.

My son is 18 in May, I go mad if he's asleep later than 11 on a school night. :D

Absolutely no way would I let a young child set their own bed time.
    They need boundaries........and sleep!
