    heres a copy of the email kaspersky sent me.

    Thank you for contacting Kaspersky Lab Technical Support.

    Please follow the below directions to install the latest version of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012:

    NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR ACTIVATION CODE TO HAND BEFORE YOU DO THIS AS YOU WILL NEED IT TO ACTIVATE.

    Step 1:

    Please can you download the product from the web link below:

    Choose save when a dialogue box appears and save to you documents or to your desktop. It may take in between 5 to 20 minutes to download depending on the speed of the internet connection.

    ==============

    Step 2:

    If you have ever had a previous version of Kaspersky installed we will need to completely remove it along with any traces it may leave behind using a the Kaspersky removal tool.

    (If you have never had Kaspersky installed before you can skip this step)

    Please can you click on the link below to download the removal tool:

    Please save this file to your documents or desktop.

    Once this has completed, please go to the downloaded file and double left click it.

    When prompted select run.

    Upon running the utility if you find the utility has not detected any Kaspersky Lab products, select Remove all known products from the drop down menu.

    Please then enter the code in the picture and click Remove. The tool will proceed to remove Kaspersky.

    You will be prompted to restart your computer upon removal of Kaspersky products.

    ==============

    Step 3:

    After the computer has restarted, please find the Kaspersky Installation file where you saved earlier on and double left click it. When prompted by windows, choose run and click yes to any other security prompts to begin the installation.

    It may take a few minutes for the installation to collect nessesary resources to launch so please be patient.

    When Windows has finished preparing for installation it will bring up a window saying "Welcome to Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 Setup Wizard". Choose next to continue.

    Follow the installation wizard prompts, clicking next until you see the option to install – click install when you are happy to do so.

    You will then come to a screen that says Installation complete. Please tick the box at the bottom right that says " Run Kaspersky Internet Security 2012" then select finish.

    (You will need to be connected to the internet at this point)

    Choose to activate commercial version

    Enter your activation code - The code is not case sensitive.

    Once the code is entered please check its correctness and then click next

    Thanks for that jhe - Obviously I can't argue with what you have been told!

    ...But I have contacted Kaspersky to try and find out why there appears to be conflicting advice, or whether there are some circumstances when uninstalling the old version before upgrading is necessary. If I get an answer, I'll post it here! :)
