It is recommended to uninstall previous versions first to avoid any conflicts.

thanks, its confusing because other parts of the kaspersky site state previous versions will automatic be uninstalled including 2010/11 when installing latest security. think kaspersky should make it clear which action is needed.0

thanks,its confusing
Agreed however reading the Kaspersky user forums some people have had issues and problems installing a new version over an old one, so they always recommend uninstalling any previous version.
I have been a Kaspersky user for many years and always uninstall before putting a new version on any of my computers to avoid any issues and have never had a problem.0 -
thanks to all who replied and just to update
i e mailed kaspersky eventually to ask their advice, they replied if i have ever had kaspersky installed i have to download the removal tool to remove all previous versions and traces of it.0 -
If anyone is updating to a new version online from the Kaspersky site and they use the removal tool they must make a note of their activation data as it will be deleted, if you remove using the computers Add & Remove Program from the control panel it gives you the option of saving the activation data.0

There is also the option of creating an activation file to store on your PC, lest you should lose your Activation code.
If you are not offered the option when you first register, you can get one here
Installation instructions or you can use mine:
Step-1. Open Kaspersky License Manager (from lower right corner).
Step-2. Click ‘Activate the application with a new license’ button. (Delete any trial key first, by clicking the red X next to the key).
Step-3. Disable your internet connection (either disable Network adapter from control panel or turn off your modem/router). (May not be necessary)
Step-4. Select ‘Activate commercial version’ and enter the activation license code as 11111-11111-11111-1111X
or select ‘Activate trial license’.
Step-5. On the Activation failed step, click on the Browse button.
Step-6. Click OK and you will now get the option to activate using a key file.
Step-7. Browse to the key location and activate Kaspersky.0 -

Rather than - or in addition to - storing your activation code on your PC, isn't it best to set up an account with Kaspersky which allows you to store it with them, so that it will automatically be accessed when upgrading?
The link given by cajef includes -
"Within your license period you are entitled to version upgrades & signatures, all you need is the activation code which is why it's important you save this to a floppy, USB or cd, this way you never has to contact support for a new code.
An alternative is to register your activation code using the My Kaspersky Account system, where it will be stored for safe keeping."
Once you've done that, provided you are within your licence period, you can upgrade very easily from KIS2011 to KIS2012 without you having to uninstall KIS2011 or even having to supply your activation code - as described here -
Applies to Kaspersky Internet Security 2012
If Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 / 2011 is installed on your computer and you would like to upgrade to Kaspersky Internet Security 2012, you should do the following:
[1] download the product distributive of Kaspersky Internet Security 2012 from the Kaspersky Lab’s official site http://www.kaspersky.com/productupdates
[2] run the downloaded file
[3] follow the instructions of the Setup Wizard.

That's what I did, and it was very straightforward!".....where it is corrupt, purge it....."0 -
There certainly seem to be plenty of different ideas about how to upgrade!
