Can an employer do this?

I have received a note in my pigeon hole today this is what it says:
Tea Fund
From the beginning of this half term 31/10/11 - 16/12/11 (7 weeks), all staff are requested to pay £2 into the tea fund per week which is to be paid at the beginning of every half term (£14 for this half term).

If you do not wish to be in the Tea Fund, that is fine, but you will not be able to bring in your own supply and must still contribute 50p per week to the flower fund. If you are paying £2 a week into the tea fund this includes the flower fund.

I would appreciate if you would let me have your £14 tea fund contribution or £3.50 flower fund contribution by Monday 14/11/11 at the latest, so I don't have to chase you individually.

In order to prevent confusion as to whether or not you have paid you will be asked to sign when you pay your contribution.

Can they insist that you don't bring in your own supplies if you do not contribute? I can understand if they say if you don't contribute then you cannot have any of the items bought out of tea fund money.
And yes the lady in the avatar is me

    Spit!

If you don't contribute to the tea fund, fine. Take in your own supply and defy them. As for the flower fund :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:, just promise not to look at the flowers!

This is some school secretary making up their own rules and looking official, when in truth, they are acting way beyond their paygrade and their competence.

An employer doesn't have to provide a kettle or a microwave/toaster....They have to provide hot water for washing hands and that's about it.

I worked in a school that charged a weekly amount for tea/coffee. I refused to pay and brought my own kettle in and used my own coffee. The milk was a bit difficult. I ended up using powdered milk. I had to use my own mug. You could also just bring a thermos filled with premade tea/coffee and it has a built in cup too.

    Not strictly.

They have to provide a way of heating hot food and a kettle if the workplace is not located near alternative options. They must provide drinking water by law.

so if you have a cafe locally they dont.

However, if you work nights and all local options are closed then they do.

I could go into detail but thats the general jist.

As for the flowers :rotfl: er no
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast

Flower fund is for if staff are off sick, if they leave or have a baby, they get sent flowers.

before last half term there used to be fruit, biscuits, bread, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fruit tea, green tea and crackers.

This half term no biscuits, no fruit, sugar ran out, no hot chocolate so thats why people are loathed to contribute to a fund where nothing is provided like before. Why should one person have to pay £2 a week if all they drink one cup of tea a day and another person pays the £2 and drinks 10 cups a day, I say bring in your own, that way its fair, you only have what you brought in.

Whats happened where ive worked before is if anyone is leaving to have a baby then a card is sent round and a donation is asked for when someone leaves etc a card is sent round and i get the chance to give a donation based on how well I knew the person.

In answer to your question i imagine yes they can do it.

Meh, I can kind of see that creating a 'flower fund' helps to avoid the uncomfortable collections that go round every time someone has a special occasion / illness.

But as for dictating what you can and cannot bring to work - puh-lease!

  • Sounds crazy to me! I'd refuse to pay it. My boss hates me at work because I refuse to join in all their incentives! lol
