Can an employer do this?

£14 sounds a lot in one go, but it is 40p a day (and includes the flower fund of 10p per day !).
30p a day for tea, coffee and milk isn't a bad deal.
Apart from being potentially seen as "not a team player" if you don't join in, the aggro of buying your own supplies, milk going off etc. isn't worth it.
I think that the rule that you cannot bring your own supplies in is to avoid the inevitable arguments that happen as people "borrow" their colleagues tea bags etc.0 -

This half term no biscuits, no fruit, sugar ran out, no hot chocolate so thats why people are loathed to contribute to a fund where nothing is provided like before. Why should one person have to pay £2 a week if all they drink one cup of tea a day and another person pays the £2 and drinks 10 cups a day, I say bring in your own, that way its fair, you only have what you brought in.
It is all a bit of give and take - some people will drink more cups of tea than others, but in the great scheme of things it isn't a major issue for the sake of a few pence per day.
It is interesting that "people are loathed to contribute" to the tea fund.
Previously it was free to the staff, but this was paid for somewhere along the way - presumably out of school funds (i.e. taxpayers !).
You might not want to pay for the tea and coffee that you drink, but I certainly don't think that I should pay for it !0 -
It never ceases to amaze me just how much time is wasted and bad feeling caused by this sort of thing.
30p per day! Why on earth can't the employer cover this and provide what is needed. What tiny percentage is this of even the lowest wage?
If they can't or won't then all behave like adults and agree a fair weekly contribution to whatever level of catering you feel is appropriate.
What next? Will some of you want a 10p contribution if somebody looks over your shoulder at your newspaper.
There is one thing, you will never agree whether to buy milk or plain chocolate biscuits.
And this is a school? Heaven help the kids!0 -

Would you be happy to pay into a tea fund and keep finding theres no sugar or tea bags have run out or theres no bread, previously it was never free, was the same price per term but there was always provisions and regularly topped up, now we are asked to pay the same for less than what we got before and i'm not talking about extras, when theres no sugar or when coffee runs out.And yes the lady in the avatar is me

Not strictly.
They have to provide a way of heating hot food and a kettle if the workplace is not located near alternative options. They must provide drinking water by law.
so if you have a cafe locally they dont.
However, if you work nights and all local options are closed then they do.
I could go into detail but thats the general jist.
As for the flowers :rotfl: er no0 -
achtunglady - will you not be allowed to use the water and kettle if you bring in your own tea and coffee?0

I am not sure I follow ?
From your original post it sounded like you got the tea and coffee etc. for free.
Are you saying that you previously paid £2 a week - the only difference being that the supplies did not run out ?0 -
I would offer to be the tea fund coordinator if you are so worried about stuff running out. But tbh its 40p a day, pay up!Cogito ergo sum. Google it you lazy sod !!0
