WE have ceramic hob and yes you need a flat bottom wok that is suitable for ceramic (not many say they are) ;)

I have a similar problem - mine is induction. Most pans in gereal say "not suitable for induction hobs". Real pain!

    Thanks everyone for your help....
So from what I've read the way forward is the non stick traditional style...I really want to "get into" cooking so I may as well do it properly. This is the one I'm thinking of buying as there are no chinese wholesalers that sell woks...we do have one that sells food so I'll call in on the off chance...but otherwise please let me know if you think this one is suitable..Or if you know of a better deal

I can certainly recommend Typhoon woks - but I have never had a carbon steel one, just the non stick one (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Typhoon-Professional-14-Non-stick-Wok/dp/B00009WBB2/sr=8-1/qid=1169833901/ref=sr_1_1/202-2348464-9527804?ie=UTF8&s=kitchen)
having those 2 handles are really handy too! I am not very strong so it helps when I need to lift it or tip it

In Asda (Stanley) tonight they had a basic smart price 14" wok for less than £2.50. Perhapas if you have one nearby try that and you have'nt lost much if you don't like it?
When cycling, I pay the same road tax as any other zero carbon emission vehicle.

On that note, can you (or somebody) please recommend me a decent and not extortionately priced wok that is suitable for a ceramic hob? :D I would prefer one that is not non-stick.

My current one was rubbish when I had a gas hob and is even more rubbish now I have a ceramic one...

    Thanks

I think I have to go against the consensus - i had a proper wok that needed seasoning, and however careful I tried to be, it rusted and built up black bits that flaked into the food.
I'm happy with tesco value, £3.79, lasts ok, and at that price, not a disaster if I kill it.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

    Hi everyone,
What would be your recommendations for a great non-stick wok? Has to be non-stick as I don't use oil (diet).
I can't afford Le Creuset unfortunately, but willing to spend up to £40 for something which will last.
    Thanks for any tips :)
  • non-stick never lasts as the coating eventually comes off. Cast-iron is the best, (it can take the high heat needed for a wok) and just use water/stock instead of oil, once you've seasoned it according to the instructions.

I have a Teflon Thermospot wok.
I think it's great, easy to clean and not too expensive.
It does have a flat bottom though, rather than a rounded one.
You can get them from BHS, take a look and see what you think.

I have a number of Teflon Thermospot frypans and have never had problems with the coating coming off.

  • with teh non-stick coating, using it on high heat regularly, and usigg any utelnsil that could possible scratch it (even plastic ones can) will rip the coating and bits will end up in your food. As teflon is used on the outside of the space shuttle (I believe) I wouldnt' recommend eating it.
