Coal used in multi fuel stove

Logs too dry? This is generally what people who have no idea about woodburning say if the fuel isn't lasting as long as they think it should - some decent log suppliers have actually been asked for wetter wood "as it lasts longer"!! Yes, it will last longer - and it will also produce a fraction of the heat of dry logs and turn your chimney into a right sticky 'orrible mess just waiting to catch fire!
Nothing at all wrong with burning dry softwood - what do people think the Scandinavians burn - and they're way in front of us here in woodburning terms! They have very little else apart from a bit of birch up there, and manage to get through much harder winters than we do! The pallet blocks will be softwood nine times out of ten - just in convenient sized lumps - but if they're cheap there's nothing wrong with them as fuel - my father in law burns nothing else and has run his stove on free pallets for three years or more now. Usually like a bloody oven in his place when mother is on stove duty!
People need to get away from the idea that heating with wood is going to be cheap "because trees grow all over the place". There's an awful lot of time, money and effort put in to turn a tree in a wood into dry logs on your doorstep!
Incidentally - a cubic metre of loose logs in a bulk bag will weigh nowhere near a tonne - probably around 300 kilos if it's dry.

Those are some of the prices you hear bandied about on here, although I think from what I can tell the people in England get a rawer deal with coal than we do.0

Just shows how savvy you have to be when buying fuel
And also how much you need to work your stove to get the best from it for as little cost as possible0
