Coal used in multi fuel stove

  • I personally don't agree with Badger and Suki. Assuming you are using dry kindling and some newspaper, you simply pop 6 bits of anthracite in the middle and wait 10 minutes. If you buy Esse, the higher grade anthracite, in all probability that won't light. However, if you're buying standard grade anthracite, which is a lot dustier than Esse, the dust accelerates ignition, making it easy to get lit. You should bear in mind that Phurnacite, which is what they're advocating buying, is made out of anthracite dust. So there is no need to buy phurnacite if you're buying standard anthracite which is naturally dusty which helps in initial ignition.

  • Would anyone care to give an opinion on the suitability and price of the stuff on this link, in relation to using a multi-fuel stove?

Its hard to know whether the wood is seasoned from that, wouldnt appear so. At 40 for bag of logs (1 cubic metre) which I assume is hardwood is a good deal. Yesterday I bought a tonne of hardwood seasoned (1 cubic metre) for 50 (delivery included) from Ballyclare
  • You'd need to check on the size of the bulk bags! Most builders bulk bags are 0.7 cubic metres - some are even less, though still look like a big chunky bag. Cubic metre bags are also available - but most wood sellers tend to specify this in the description. "Bulk bag" alone though has about as much meaning as "a load" or "a piece of string"! It also doesn't mention whether they're hardwood or softwood logs.

I'm guessing the recycled blocks will be pallet blocks at that price. Nothing wrong with burning them though.

the pallet bloacks would burn alot quicker, always think its worth paying more for seasoned hardwood
  • Bulk bags are 1/2 ton which is 1 cubic meter apparently.

The logs are (ordinary) softwood he said and when asked if they were seasoned he said they are dry enough, people saying they are too dry!! What does that mean? Asked how long they have been seasoned, he said they've been sitting for 4 months.
The recycled block are old pallets etc cleaned and nail removed.
Might give this one a miss!!

I wouldnt buy softwood, it burns too quickly and if you look around you should be able to get 1 cubmic metre of seasoned hardwood for around 50 quid, as I said I did although may not be as local to you

Wood needs at least 12 months exposed to wind and covered from the rain to be properly seasoned.

Easier said then done up here. Nearest I could source hardward was Lisburn and then the delivery charge of £40 priced it out of reach

And tbh the hardwood you are getting from the big companies here is imported from Poland ( you might notice all our forests are softwoods) - kind of makes it not as eco friendly as you are thinking
