What's the sensitivity of your speakers?
It's an indication of efficiency i.e. how much energy from the amp output stage is converterd into sound energy.

How do you find out the sensitivity of a speaker? What is it measured in?

  • Is it you or does everyone in the house say they sound quiet, perhaps get your ears syringed may be the answer. Failing which my first question is why did you buy it?... based on recommendation / suggestion from magazine or forum ? Sound quality is like visual quality is like dress sense you have to go and see(hear) for yourself and make sure it fits you.

Your akai has a "total audio output" of 20 watts. There is no mention of RMS, MPO or MPPO. Its underpowered for loud, room filling music. If you do replace it don't just buy on watts. Power output figures can mean very little in regards to volume and mean nothing in regards to quality.

If your budget will stretch to them, a pair of these puppies will be easily loud enough for all but the largest mansion houses, and even then.....

Shame you weren't running a PC sound system, otherwise I'd recommend a Logitech

It's not designed for sound quality (although it's pretty good at it through optical connection) but it's good for bass. I've had it over 130db at 1 metre away :D (my sound metre only registers up to 130db). It's 500w RMS.

You can still get some cheap hifi systems second hand for £50 that will be loud enough

Where do you live btw, you may found a local freegle where you can get one for free.

  • We have separates, with a Yamaha amp. The system is capable of 450 watts, even having it up to a quarter hurts my ears!! The sound is so much better in the lower ranges when you have separates with greater capability, would never go back to a single unit again.

    Would headphones help?
I know they won't make the stereo louder but the music will sound louder.
Cordless headphones, if you don't wish to be 'tethered' to your stereo.

  • Your stereo is 2 x 20w, if you want one twice as loud, get one that is 2 x 40w rms.
Look on the back of your speakers to see what maximum watts rms they can take, otherwise any louder amp/stereo will blow them as soon as you turn the volume up too high.
I've got an old kenwood amp which does 5 x 100w rms and it shakes the sofa from the other side of the room, think it's 8 years old now.

Either I missed it or you edited it. Was just clarifying because I've seen people more than once claim speaker impedance was sensitivity. :D

    "What is the speaker sensitivity?"

    "8"

    "8 what?"

"It says Ohms, 8 Ohms on the sticker" :(

    Anyway, excellent explanation you gave.
