How do I get a louder stereo?

Hi, My home music system really isn't loud enough for me:o At full volume you can still have a conversation without raising your voice!
My previous one wasn't loud enough either (but this one is quieter again), I initially rigged it up with the speakers that came with it but I've since put it together with my older speakers which are at each end of the room. These speakers used to be plenty loud enough with my previous-previous stereo !
Do I need another music system or new speakers?
I so miss my loud music:p
I'm sure this is a daft question to many but i'm a technophobe:o

Some speakers are more sensitive than others but are unlikely to make that much difference. You need a system with a bigger/more powerful amplifier to drive the speakers harder without distorting. They are usually rated in Watts RMS. As a rough guide, a typical cd radio boombox is around 1-2W per channel RMS, fairly loud is around 30-50WRMS, plenty loud is around 100W per channel RMS.0

I am a-mazed that folk here can diagnose the problem, and what to do without asking for details of your system! (no disrespect) so if you could, post details of your system on here, and we will of course, try to help.0
