Finding car insurance after drink driving offence

  • I didn't tell them it's for business use - as I AM NOT PRESENTLY IN BUSINESS YOU MORON. I told them it is for personal use which is what it is for. By the way I also did quotes for hatchbacks on moneysupermarket and the cheapest I could get was £750 for a Renault Clio 1.2, so please stick your self-righteousness and pedantry where they belong.

Arrr, you want a 330i petrol now....they are a little more to insure, group 17E according to Autotrader.

If you renew with Direct Line and cancel after a few months, you will get charged admin fee and cancellation charges, you better ask them what their charges are or check your current policy documents/terms of business. You will get your new claims bonus off Direct Line to pass to your new insurers once you have cancelled the policy and paid whatever fee/charge they ask you to pay, obviously you wont gain any extra NCD for the 2 months on risk but you wont lose your current entitlement.

You could insure just you with one of the other companies for now and add him later on, that would save cancelling the DL policy mid term, as long as you advise them at the start that you will require cover for the BF in the future and try and get an indication in writing of the extra cost.

As for being fair, you either buy the car you want and pay the insurance premiums to include him or he doesnt drive it and gets his own car and insures it himself, which probably wont be practical or save you(both) any money.

Either that or buy a 320/318i se which are cheaper to buy and a little slower but just as nice to drive and you will save on road tax/fuel.

Sorry, its the 330i SE Diesel, did look at petrol but the mpg was daft so decided on the diesel! Parkers says 05-07 models are group 33 and 08 on are group 34. There's so many different 330's it gets confusing! These are the '254bhp 0-60 in 6.2 seconds' ones so I think thats where the high insurance group comes from.

I was trying to get quotes from other companies to add him on later but i'm finding it really difficult to get them to give me quotes because he doesn't yet have his licence back so it's a "computer says no" situation! Direct Line's cancellation charges don't seem too bad and I've found one specialist drink driver insurance company who will quote before you get your licence back so I'm going to give them a ring today :)

Or they'll book a taxi for the big event.

Or OP could have the car they want and leave him to a runabout as suggested so he has his own insurance and hairdryer car.

Nice little Kia should do it.

    5t.

NO THANKS!!!! Can't think of anything worse than making small talk with a taxi driver in that situation! :rotfl: Don't think it's something you can book in advance for anyway really! If it came to it we both have family who could take me, but it's not just that, I'm sick of driving him around everywhere so I'm looking forward to him being able to drive again. Its going to work out cheaper to get totally ripped off on insurance on one car than it is to run and maintain 2 cars. My insurance on the BMW on my own is £1000 and his is going to be over well over £1000 whatever car he is driving so hopefully we'll be able to find something under the £3000 mark for insurance for both of us. Had a couple of quotes from comparethemarket around the £2000 mark so its looking promising :)
  • Have you considered a 320d se?

I have a E91 (estate) 2007 320d 163hp with 118K miles and had a remap which takes it to 200bhp and made such a difference to the performance and economy when driven slowly and not that much extra on the insurance as you need to tell them. I get nearly 600 miles to a tank of diesel too.

Would be cheaper to buy, insure and run than a 330d. The M Sports are dearer and a lot nicer with the sport seats, bumpers, steering wheel and wheels etc but they are no quicker.

Anyway, good luck with whatever you do.

Tell him to use shankses pony or a bike! If he has been stupid enough to loose his licence why should you act as his taxi.

If you do put him on your insurance make sure he pays all the extra premiums for the next 5-10 years.

  • My partner used hyperformance, allen and allen, and a quote following their ban
  • Don't let him drive your car...simples.

If he wants to pay for insurance let him pay for his own car as well.
