Finding car insurance after drink driving offence

I am looking for some advice on companies which offer cheap insurance for drink drivers.

My car insurance renewal is due on 1st December 2011. I currently drive a Citroen C2 VTS but I am looking to change to a BMW 330D estate in march/april next year.

I have a clean license and 4 years no claims bonus and no accidents in the last 5 years. The problem is that last December my boyfriend stupidly allowed himself to be persuaded to drive his friends car while they were both over the limit. He then even more stupidly decided not to give a breath sample for analysis when he got pulled over by the police. He was also uninsured for his friends vehicle so he received a 17 month ban which was reduced to 13 months because he did the drink drive awareness course.

Obviously he was extremely stupid to do what he did and he could easily have killed someone. It was genuinely a moment of madness which he deeply regrets and something he will never do again.

He is due to get his licence back in mid-Jan 2012 and he will have either DR60 or DR70 (not sure which) and IN10 on it for failing to provide a specimin for analysis and driving without insurance.

The complicated part is that I have to renew on December 1st and my current insurers (direct line) will not accept my partner on the policy. I am trying to find an insurer who will allow me to add him to my policy in Jan when he gets his licence back and who will not completely rip me off :( I know some people will think that he deserves to pay for what he's done but I am completely innocent in all of this and just hoping to keep the cost of my insurance down. We have a baby due in May 2012 so it is going to be important for him to be insured.

Does anyone know of any companies who might be able to give me a competitive quote? The cheapest companies I have managed to find so far with him on my insurance are mymotorquote.com- £1453 for the C2 and £2122 for the BMW and broker king £1539 (C2) and £2176 (BMW) for me to be insured on my own in the meantime is around the £700 mark for both companies. I think these quotes are manageable however the reviews for these companies are really bad!! Are there any reputable companies which might be able to give similar quotes?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Lucy

why on earth would you refuse to provide a sample and make things worse? anyway there are companies on the internet that do that sort of insurance, but you gotta accept that the insurance is gonna be high after what's happened no matter who you're with

just googling 'drink driving insurance' throws up a load of different companies that you could get a quote off just to see where you stand
Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?
  • Would NFU quote ? The reason I ask is that they are not online and seem to be human rather than simply an algorithm. Failing that a broker perhaps.
  • wow he is next to uninsurable with many insurers who will quote something 10k to insure you and him.

a local brokers will be your best bet.
  • I'm currently banned (morning after night before), Tesco has been cheapest by a mile. I don't have an IN10 though that could make a difference.

    BMW 330D

I think your problem is here ^^ a group 16 car

I think your prices seem competitive for the car type.

Car insurance companies are as bad as each other but the 2 companies you have stated are brokers not Insurance companies. Do you know who the insurance company is they quoted you?

Well, the BMW isnt cheap to insure and, as you know, your bf is now a major cost to insure which is to be expected.

Surely it'd be cheaper for him to buy his own low insurance car - something really cheap like a 800cc Daewoo Matiz and insure this?

Unfortunately, dont drink driving offences last for 10 years or something on your licence?

Because you know you are over or are not capable of making an informed decision when drunk.

Shouldn't you be deducting your normal insurance cost from total and have him give you what's left?

still doesn't make a lot of sense. just making the problem worse, even when you're drunk you know that refusing to give a breath specimen is just going to compound the problem
Come on, it's not rocket surgery is it?
  • dont bother getting into this discusion about comprehending refusing a breathtest thats a different topic for DT.

as for the OP your facing a high increase in premiums on anything you intend on owning, in10 is telling the insurers he has a history of being uninsured wich insurers hate with a passion, then theres dui also insurers hate with a passion, then failing to provide wich suggests he knew he was over limit anyway and thought he could play the system wich backfired thats how the insurers kind of see things.

his punishment is not over yet he has 5 years to go he's 13months without driving, here comes the 5 years worth of pocket punishment all insurers will dish out.

insuring a simple 800cc matiz with you as named driver he could be looking close to £2k insurance.

you have a decision to make either include him on your policy or exclude him from driving your car and save yourself some money. if he wishes to drive then he can buy a car and insure it on his own.
