  • I wonder if we put a glide path and a flight path together, would it = a double negative and thus back where started?

Anyway, dinner rescued and we have fish pie - ink ordered - washing in machine, d/w emptied and refilled, rubbish out and I have done some work - marvellous start to the morning.

Have a good one Tilly

  • On a practical note I am looking for some advice. For my lovely lodgers I am feeding them as well - no issue as I love cooking and planning - I charge them £3.50 and for that they get a two course meal. Anyone who has read my thread will know I plan well and our food shopping is very reasonable. Now comes the concern, my DH says I am not charging them enough and it should be at least a £5.

If they had a McD, or F&C, or Chinese etc it would be more than I charge but and this is a big but, now there are two, £7 a night seems a lot to me, and that works out to at least £21 and occasionally more, if my young lad stays 3 not 2 nights. In terms of my Monday-Friday cooking, it doesn't cost me that much to feed 6. Therefore I feel guilty setting the rate higher as it is already covering the cost for us all eating, thus our family of 4 eats free in the week.

So I guess I am asking if I am being too generous or whether DH is unrealistic? I have a gene which seems to predicate I have to be over fair at all times.

    Any thoughts?

I think £3.50 is fair. It's a good price for a 2 course homecooked meal yes... but as you say, it won't cost you that much to add two extra mouths into your cooking equations, so I think it works out fairly for everyone - you get probably a bit more than you need in terms of recouping the cost, and they get a good price on a fab home-from-home meal. Sounds like a win-win situation to me :)

  • Bless you Caz. Thanks for your thoughts and it has helped my mind. It's strange when we deal with so many big issues each day, home, work, family etc, but sometimes these little things need settling in order for things to feel right.

Am off to take'a quick break now and get the dinner prepared for this evening - fish pie anyone?

  • Hi Tilly,
i agree with Caz, £3.50 is a nice price for them but in a funny way it's maybe reassuring for you too, in that you are looking after them and not forcing them out each evening to 'waste' money they may not have at the chippy or on single meals to microwave. Makes it friendlier for them and a better atmosphere all round.
Some of my family's best freinds started out as lodgers (all meals in) with my Granny 50 odd years ago!

  • Hi PWD, thanks for responding, it's good to know I have pitched it OK. I love having everyone sit together and it is definitely like an extended family. Makes lodgers life easier also, as they don't have to think about making a meal.

When you are doing something like this, it's good to get some feedback.

Fish pie made for dinner and I remembered to take the braised oxtail outfox the freezer which was slow cooked in red wine, garlic and onions, then bones removed, and it's being turned into a pie for tomorrow night. Lovely

  • Hi Caz, I will lay an extra place for you.......

Sounds like me and liver. The only time I get to eat it, is in a restaurant.

It's odd... they all like fish, and mash, and even like them together on a plate, but bake them together in the oven and it's like I put plates of poison in front of them. Even the man-wife doesn't like it! Most pesky!

It has been a delight to read so many diaries over the last few days, and some young guys pushing to be MF. I wish I had had their insight and financial savvy at that age.

    Love the diary! :T

I am 25 and must say that without MSE and these diaries I wouldn't have started overpaying our mortgage. I understand what you are saying about these forums - my mom looked at me as if I was mad when I mentioned that we were overpaying.
