  • Morning US, that's an excellent idea for next year. I'll have a chat with DS as they are both taking on a project next year. One for DoE, the other as he is preparing for DoE when 14 :).

Have a good weekend, Tilly x

Your charitable doings sound great Tilly. It's a very difficult thing to talk about - on the one hand, you don't want to appear 'holier than thou', but on the other hand, if nobody talked about these things nobody would likely do them!

There is a Tressell Trust? food bank a few miles from me - a total faff to get to without a car, but a donation seems like a good Christmas present to the world this year.
  • I have to admit that Christmas is the only time I don't donate to a food bank - I figure they get plenty from the once of year type of charitable people and receive less during the remainder of the year.

  • Evening MRN, you may well be right. The local paper had a piece on the food bank and the numbers of people it supports have increased so much this year. I feel remiss as I have never popped an extra can or packet into the Food Bank trolley at Tesc@ or Asd@ and I feel bad about that. An extra £2/3 per week would not have been an effort and could have helped someone. The article certainly rang home.

Think your donating is fab - Ive been doing foodbank runs for the last few months , tbh before that I was aware of them but wouldnt have known where to find them to donate, so I think there is much more public awareness now of the amount of people struggling...

I will do one last one next week to give time for things to go out before/around xmas hopefully! my cupboards are very well stocked so wont miss a few bits! ;)
  • Morning Tilly,

You've inspired me to get searching for places to donate a few bits to this christmas instead of the normal PDSA shop - although I do like them as they send you a letter telling you how much money your donations have raised for them which is nice.

Also I noticed you mentioned your little (or not so little) ones doing DofE, I did all 3 levels of DofE through Guiding and became a Supervisor and Advisor on it so if you want to know anything about any part of it I will try and help you out!

And I'll have another go at finding my local food bank - gave up last time and gave it to one by my office.

Was funny last time - did a specific shop and would only buy bargains :D.
A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort

I keep coming back to this thread and seeing discussions about people doing positive things for others. It makes me realise that we've been so focused on our own finances for the last year or two that we've completely stopped this aspect of our lives. Despite work stresses etc., I've never felt so grateful for our quality of life as I do this year - 2013 will need to see me giving something back :o

ITA Ed, in our quest to be mortgage free, it's easy to become a littl obsessed and forget about other things. I'm feeling somewhat inspired too and will be making some enquirie about the food bank too.

Tilly - thanks for bringing this to your thread, I'm sure it has inspired a bunch of us to help too x
