  • Thanks TYO. The weird weather hasn't helped the veg and some of the fruit though this year. I spoke to a relative today who is a keen gardener and he said that even he is having problems - we have only grown veg for the last 4 years and I was checking whether we had done something wrong. For examples, mange tout and peas - fab - green beans, dreadful. Doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason.

Just making a late lunch, washing flapping on the line, then having a glass of wine in the garden with my book

  • Hi Bonnington, thanks for your lovely comments, I feel quite embarrassed as I rabbit on about so many things. However, somehow they are linked into how we live our lives, which positively affects the mortgage :T

Have a lovely week, Tilly x

Well so much for sitting in the garden with a glass of wine - there I was, peaceful, quiet, good book and black cloud  Shortly afterwards rain.

Fresh peas, home grown potatoes and lamb shanks for dinner - eaten whilst watching the rain pour down. Gorgeous August.

I made a salad for lunch tomorrow with the left over veg, with a little basil oil.

Hanging baskets had a good feed with plant food today, plus more weeding finished. More foody things used up - I served ice cream for dessert with dried fruit soaked in port and brandy - I made it for Xmas two years ago - but it still tasted lovely :T. Two cakes made, one to take into work, one for home and used up bits and pieces to make the fillings. I am quite enjoying this 'decluttering' and it is quite amazing the bits and pieces we have lurking in backs of cupboards, fridge, freezer, larder etc.

Hope everyone's week goes well and the sun reappears.

    Best wishes Tilly x

  • Morning, earlier dog walk planned as I have to be in the office for 8am.

Lodger money OPd and today will be a NSD :)

I do have some ironing to do but that can be completed this evening. I want to have a bath, face pack and weigh in, then an early night.

I still have a lot of onions to use up, so I may prepare some for the freezer and use in curries, chillis etc. Never done this before but I guess it will be fine.

    Best wishes, Tilly

Be careful, we froze onions once and it made everything in the freezer smell of onions! Definitely cook them first!

I really enjoy reading your posts Tilly :) it's really inspiring how your MFW quest has changed yours and your family's lives.

  • Hi Sepa, I never thought about the freezer smelling - I don't fancy that. Will think about cooking them and perhaps I should batch cook a mountain of tomato/onion base - more thinking needed.

It has had a rather profound impact on the family :rotfl: It makes me laugh when I hear the children talking about shopping and maximising their cash - yep I really have heard them say that. Admittedly I work from home a lot so they hear me talking on con calls but it makes me chuckle.

I will empty and re-sort the freezer one evening this week, then check how much space I have. If I can gain half a drawer then I will cook a tomato/onion base, portion and freeze.

NSD yesterday and today. Bargainous steak, home grown salad/potatoes for dinner this evening.

I am starting a shopping list for the next bulk shop - ie caster sugar, flours, grease proof paper etc.

No further money updates, I don't even have any pennies to switch from the current account to mortgage, as it's all whole numbers :rotfl:

Hi Tilly, batch cooking tomato / onion base is exactly what I do to get around the problem :)

If it's any comfort, at least you will never want to freeze jackfruit, which is even worse than onion (we got given one once, and as they are HUGE mum decided to freeze it in portions. Ykkk), and let's not even think about what durian would do to your freezer!

Jackfruit smells nice and fruity when it is fresh. It is only durian which is aptly called 'stink bomb'. You can smell it from miles away.
