They can't invoice for a CV, they invoice for a job offer.

Thanks, I'm well aware of that.

They won't interview you if they've received your CV from several agencies because interviews generally lead to job offers and THEN they would potentially be invoiced by whomever had sent your details over.

That will depend entirely on the agency and I would say only really bad agencies work like this!

I am the MD of a specialist Accountancy agency. My customers are my clients AND my candidates. Candidates may not pay me, but they are just as important in the whole process. Today candidates become tomorrows clients if you do your job well.

It's important for me to get to know a candidate well to establish if we can work together and represent them. They have requirements and clients have requirements.

Only a very poor agency will take what my client says and trot along and find what they want. A decent Consultant will consult! Sometimes clients have unrealistic expectations, often they haven't considered the most cost effective method of recruiting, or they haven't looked at other options. It's my job to find out what they are trying to achieve and facilitate that. They might think they need to spend £50k recruiting a qualified Accountant, but it turns out they don't need someone at that level. Or they might think their future Accountant has to be qualified and end up paying a premium when they could work just as well with someone qualified by experience.

It frustrates me that people expect poor service from an agency. If you get poor service, find a better Consultant.

Wow you beat me to it as I was going to say exactly this!

I work in recruitment within accountancy too and was just about to say that a decent consultant wouldn't just go along with this and would consult with the client to suggest options, i.e. take someone who's got all the right experience but may just happen not to be in a job right now.

In 11 years I've never had a client request that people are working. I find it very strange, but also difficult to believe it's not illegal. A more common request is for people who are available immediately.

I agree, never heard the like.

For some agencies, being immediately available is a positive not a negative.

Thats why agencies call people to see if they have been put forward for jobs so this don't happen.

Even if it did the employer rejects the 2nd CV as the 1st agency got there first meaning if they then took on that person only one agency gets invoiced.

Anyway we are straying from what I started off saying. They wont interview me as the agency says they can't put me forward as I a not working and its nothing to do with the time I have been out of work as some told me that when I was out of work 2 weeks.

and for the 2 jobs I saw this week I have used that to my advantage as thet are both immediate starts (not via agencies though)

I am sorry but this does not stack up whatsoever...you are out of work two weeks and an agent gives you this story, and a large proportion of 12 or so agents have told you since this time...

...I packed in my job earlier this year voluntarily due to excessive travel for prev 4 years and not getting home at night etc and had agents falling over themselves to place me again - in same industry as you I understand.

We are straying but you are giving incorrect information on the thread and regardless of whether or not it affects you, other people may read it.

What you are talking about morally SHOULD happen, but legal does not have to happen and there are lots of agencies that do not call candidates. To anyone else reading this who actually wants to take advice and listen to it, from someone who does this for a living, might I recommend restricting your job search to a few decent, ethical agencies, rather than 12!

With regards to your actual query, I'm not sure what else you want to get from the thread, as you already seem to have all the answers. They won't put you forward. They don't have to put you forward. An agency can choose to represent whoever they want. You have already told everyone it's not illegal.

A few of us don't think it's right, but you can't force them to submit your details. I'd be reluctant to work with you because you don't seem to want to take any information on board. I've asked how long you've worked in accounts and is it recent. I own a recruitment company in your field. Have you not considered that any advice I give you may be beneficial?

then are probably a qualified accountant and they may be thin on the ground so hence why you got interviews

I was asking if anyone had come across this and seems not the case ,so it's just me

I have worked in accounts 20 years and lost my job last year if that matters.
