Thanks squeaky, will try that, they rise loads then 'spread out' across the sheet. Actually these were Hovis mixes (bought on bogof) :D so I just followed their directions but it seems to happen whichever recipe I use.
One day I might be more organised...........

Maybe you're just rubbish at making rolls then! ;)

I'd be inclined to try the "less sugar" route first. I think it has more effect on the outcome of bread esp rolls than anything else.

Then water, if that doesn't fix it.

Then... well... just get used to flat rolls :)

    Sorry.

Why not ask on the hovis website since it's their mix? And by all means come back and let us know.

I want to make banana teabread to use up some over ripe 'nanas - recipe calls for bicarb - now I have a tub of something which is either bicarb or baking powder - is there any way I can tell which (plastic label has peeled off!).

has the tub got a coloured lid?

if it's the supercook tubs that i usually buy the bicarb has a blue lid. i find the labels peel off too, so i've started writing what powder it is on the lid with a freezer pen.

Plus, how much is it going to matter?

Baking powder is a mixture of bicarb and something else, IIRC, so if it's baking powder your bread might rise more than you'd expect, but as banana bread tends to be a bit dense (at least in this house!) that's not going to be disastrous, is it?

Our resident chemist will advise further in due course, I hope! :rotfl:

Thanks everyone! Borrowed a bit of bicarb of my friend, then promptly found 2 unopened tubs at the back of the cupboard! Must get more organised.

I've been cleaning a cupboard and loads of stuff is out of date the earliest about March 2006. (I have spent a while searching...)

So if it's March 2006 is that ok for soup mixes (dried stuff), packets soup/dried rice/lentils/spaghetti/other pasta.

    ?????

    Thanks

How long if they are open with a wire tie round the top?

Fran, it should be certainly edible. Some of the taste in the soup mix may have faded, but you probably won't notice the difference. the rice and pasta should be ok as long as it hasn't got damp and gone soft.

I checked back through a bunch of threads, the concensus seems to be as long as they haven't gone musty or mouldy they might be a bit tougher but should still be OK.

    Thanks!

What about if it's opened with a wire tie round? (I edited that in so you probably didn't see it.) How long would that be ok?
