Not too worried - I have a Haynes Manual and this weekend I will be going over the car following that so that any work that does need doing can be done before we put it in for an MOT - plus a very old family friend/mechanic who gets work through word of mouth is much cheaper for any work that needs doing (When the car broke down he charged us £70 for a full service including flushing the cooling system and replacing a worn pipe in the coolant system. I was quoted £150 by another garage just to replace the pipe) BUT he doesn't do MOTs which is why we are looking at Kwik Fit as the place he takes it too charges £40 at least.

Yes, but the point is that you will have to pay for another MOT after they have failed it so you will be spending more in the long run. The best place to take your car for MOT is to a garage that does purely MOT's and doesn't repair them themselves as they have no ulterior motive in failing your car unnecessarily.

Yep, I agree with curry-queen, an MOT only garage has no axe to grind and you know that if it fails on something then it really needs doing. When my little girl was tiny I had no option but to put mine into the nearest garage, I was quite pleased as it only cost me £110 for the work needed to get it through the MOT.

Trouble was they hadn't checked the brake system properly and the caliper snapped off driving it's way through the brake pipe and the disc. It sent me sailing across three lanes of traffic with my baby strapped in the back. If I have to take my car to a garage for something I can't manage I will only go to somewhere that has a personal referral for great service.

Thats me starting this fantastic new challenge today and I reckon its been a good day. First of all I have my goal which is a 4 day break to New York in September with my bessy mate cos we are both 40 this year. The goal was already in place but I had no clue how I was going to fund it. This challenge may not pay the lot but I suspect it will go a long way.
So far then - set up an Ing account specially for the job.
This morning transfered 28.50 over after disputing a charge my bank had placed on an internet payment - it actually was my fault but as it had never happened before they agreed to refund it (Good on you Nationwide)
Also am sitting here smiling because my Sainsburys online delivery is now late which means they will give me £10 off the next order. The one I am recieving today also had £10 off cos the last one was late!!! (keep being late Sainsburys you are saving me a fortune) I will also add all the other discounts in such as the wine discount (yes I bought more than 6!!)
Also the lovely inland revenue wrote today to tell me they are sending a £144 refund yee haa.
The biggest saving I will make though is when I give up smoking in 2 weeks time.
    Not a bad day huh!

  • Good week for me :j :

My water rates have gone down 53p a month  - from what i remember they went down last year by a couple of quid - will probably get a letter next year saying I owe then £££££££££.

New Council Tax bill only paying £5 more a month

Renewed my car insurance – saving £21 a month

Re worked how I do my shopping (less in Tesco and more in the market) Now should spend around £100 a month instead of £165 saving £65 a month

    Overall savings of £81.53 a month - £978.36 this year! :T

Mr Pennywise & I have decided to save half of this - £40 a month – and use the other £40 for stuff to do up the house and turn the yard into a garden :D .

Reading these posts has really inspired me to cut down on my spending. I'm making small cuts this month and hope to be fully into it for the April challenge. I'll start on March 28th (pay day).
