just had another thought......right-click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced, in the performance box click on settings.

    1. In the visual effects tab, choose custom and untick all but Smooth edges of screen fonts, Use Drop shadows.... and Use visual styles, and apply.

    2. Advanced tab > change virtual memory, select custom setting and set to 2048 max & min, apply. You need to reboot for these to take effect. Fixing the VM may also help to reduce hdd churn.

Thanks Gunjack - I do have the product key on the bottom of my laptop. Will this or the one from speccy (which I just downloaded) both work if I need to reinstall - though I hope it doesn't come to that - that is a LOT of upheaval, I have so much software on the computer- most of which I do have install disks for, but some of which took HOURS to install....

In terms of the copying thing - sorry, I was rather vague. I get this little dialogue box thing that appears on the top left hand corner of my screen. On the blue rim at the top of it it says copying... then there is an icon of a file transferring and names of files come up - like when you are pasting lots of files at once to a new folder or something. chkdsk seems to be something that is in some of the names. It happens really quickly - sometimes only for 3 or 4 seconds so I have not been fast enough to actually read or write down what is going on....

The processes are when the computer is calmed down and cpu usage is 0% or 1%

Is the virtual memory the paging rate?

I will post a new hjt thread - though I have had to reinstall cisco vpn as I am using it for off site access for work.

Just as an aside as this speccy thing is really interesting for a non-techie like me.

My motherboard and cpu is currently at 53 degrees C and my hdd is 38. Are these OK temperatures?

Yep, these are okay :) you should see a difference if you looked when the machine was working hard (i.e. it will get hotter), and tie that into when/how much the fan is operating (to cool it down).

the Virtual Memory is the Page File, which is an amount of storage on your hdd used to load stuff into and then in and out of RAM when in use. If you let windows manage the page file, especially if your RAM (commit charge figure) is high compared to the physical RAM you have fitted, then it causes a lot of HDD churning ;) as windows is slotting files in & out of the pagefile wherever it can fit them and so retrieving them when needed is also more onerous.

If you fix the page file windows tends to use the same physical section of the hdd for this function, resulting in less hdd churn. A good figure to set it to is twice your installed physical RAM, in your case 2048 MB (or 2 GB) :)

speaking of hdd space, when did you last clean out your old System Restore points ?? That may save you a couple of GB (although XP ain't anywhere near as bad as vista for this).

open My Computer, right-click on C drive, Properties. Click Disk Clean Up, let it churn through and produce the list of old files it could remove (make sure all the boxes are ticked in the list, except Catalog Files for the File Indexer), then click the More Options tab, then click to remove old restore points. It will take a while to calculate this before you can click OK and then confirm the operation.

this is the trick, knowing what you need/use and to leave it alone when tweaking/cleaning a pc ;)

..and the box you describe sounds like some backup-type software doing it's thing...do you still have diskeeper installed ??

one other thing, run the mcafee removal tool twice

    http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507

this will remove any leftover bits after you uninstalled mcafee earlier :)

Argh just posted long post and lost it.

    Keeping it shorter

I only have 1GB of RAM. Presume that will mean I should set different values for the virtual memory.

No diskeeper - that was uninstalled. I had been told, in the context of a conversation about why I should not defragment my hard drive (though since my hdd is not solid state I dont see why that is an issue but however..) that it was about indexing files and that it was having trouble and basically failing.... dont know if that makes sense.

Have never cleaned out system restore files..... but i have defragmented if that is the same thing - but not for a long time as per the info above.

re cisco. My old uni required me to use it, but i hadn't used it for years. after finally uninstalling it I discovered that my new job uses it if i want to work out of the office - typical!!

will post hjt log and then do the mcafee thing again.

wow, that's half the size of your original one :) still too many lenovo services running though, and, I suspect, that includes the backup prog that's giving you the box in the top left. A sortie into services.msc will be needed to stop most of them running, but not without checking on exactly which does what and therefore what you don't need running all the time.

Defragging isn't the same as a Disk Cleanup as I described earlier. I do recommend you do the Disk Cleanup, after you've run the mcafe removal tool.

well i cant follow the instructions because I didn't register my computer on the macafee website...... so that puts paid to that.....

Oh well. I know for next time, and if I ever get a new computer with macafee i will register in case i ever need to use it again, though i do reckon that avast is quicker/less hassle so far.

I'll do the disk cleaner later tonight/tomorrow. Tomorrow we are going to buy thermal grease for the big operation - can't wait!!

Why are you consider replacing thermal grease? Software is the cause of slowness, not grease

The fan could be on by design, or because the vents underneath have insufficient air flow, or because a process is hogging the cpu.
