Using IE for the time being will rule out firefox issues, add-ins, and it uses less ram
diskeeper is one of many things running that obviously isn't helping with speed, it may be responsible for churning
The things you can't delete, do they appear when you login as another user?
see post 29 re nokia
using hijackthis tick and fix these

and or uninstall google toolbar/chrome if you have it
go into task manager, performance, tick show processes from all users,
see view, you can select extra columns
look for the process or processes that are using the most cpu, the most ram, doing the most disk read/writes, especially during churning
run chkdsk c: /F from the cmd prompt - is the hard disk making any ticking noises?
have a look at the manual, and at some of the lenovo utilities, there may be a way of factory restoring it, which is the best solution to any slowness problems, after backing up your data!!

Just a quick question.
Was it wise to advise the OP to remove Mcafee Enterprise? It is a good Corporate package and would probably be free to the OP (Corporate licence?)Always get a Qualified opinion - My qualifications are that I am OLD and GRUMPY:p:p0 -
Hey DCodd - I am the OP. I did have some concern about removing McAfee, but after talking with OH we deicided that since my computer is really on the way out, anything is worth trying and that the free stuff does the job just as well!! Macafee really was draining the speed of my machine. I am happy so far.
closed - am about to now follow your new reccys. I got nokia deleted!!! Was just being stupid!!0 -
Hi closed.
So I have done the other stuff you mentioned there. I typed in the chdsk command into the run box, just as you typed it, but it said that it couldn't lock it as it was in use by another process.. something like that. It asked if I wanted to run it on next startup. I said no, but if you think I should then I will do.
The computer isnt churning as much now to be honest. There are nofunny noises, though the fan is on a LOT. At the moment with just iexpoler open, of between 1 and 4 % commit charge 745/2458
iexplore is using around 23000K of memory, avastSvc 38500K, avastUI 7348K, explorer 5700K the rest are below 3000K
Do you think it is now time to start looking for hardware?0 -
I have tried again. It said it couldn't lock it because the file was NTFS.
Then there was a paragraph saying the file ws in use by another process. I have not asked it to run on start up, but I have nothing else open except from internet explorer.
AARRRGGHHH !!
Thanks for all your help so far - If I factory restore the computer, do you mean basically wipe the harddrive and start again? I do have a back up, but I don't have a windows installer disk which will be a problem...0 -
Here is the ccleaner stuff. I have no clue what is going on....

soz it's taken a while, but try doing the above in CCleaner's startup tab, reboot and post the new processes running and commit charge. If the hdd is still churning go into avast and check you haven't got a boot-time or other scheduled scan set to run.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
You have to run chkdsk on startup, so answer Y and reboot.!!

Closed and GunJack, thank you both so much for all this help. I am so grateful that you are being so patient and helping me with this at all - please don't feel you have to apologise. I just wish I could at least buy you guys a proper pint!!!
HD was not ticking on start up, and the churning has abated a lot. No avast stuff is due to run.
I now have 61 processes running. Commit charge is 480/2458. This is much better. We have 100M less and over 30 processes fewer!!
Thanks again, so much

if we're there or thereabouts, you may want to consider cleaning the fan out around now. Lenovo handily have the maintenance manuals available online for reference, and are of a good standard, so that and a screwdriver should suffice
Most thinkpads have the fan accessed from under the keyboard, but check your particular model. Link to your manual:-

Hi, it's me again
I have managed to enlist OH on the job of cleaning the fan at the weekend, however, I have just read the manual and it all sounds a bit technical....
Is this step necessary? Am I being a wimp by having reservations about it... Will it cut down the number of processes I am running?
I am guessing the answer to that last question is no, but I guess my issue is how do I cut down the processes further?
Will cleaning the fan stop it from being on as much as it is on?
Thanks again, I really am a computer illiterate!
