If you're running XP, you can (including AV and firewall) end up with under 20 processes running at idle, depending on what you personally need. Might be an idea to post the spec of the machine (right-click My Computer and select Properties).
How much longer will it last ??? Piece of string questionIt really depends on what else is wrong over and above the HDD...you may find with cleaning out the fan, a new hdd, a battery and a clean install and it'll do several more years, or months, or...well, you get the picture
Ha ha ha ha - I think i have 90 or something!!!!:rotfl:
Will also post the spec tonight!!!0 -
no wonder it's taking so long to boot !!!!
for example, the machine I'm on now has 23 processes running at idle, and commit charge of just under 300MB. And that's with the full Avira security suite (which I've got a free trial of so am testing out) rather than avast and windows firewall that I'd normally be running....the "normal" setup is 17 processes and around 200MB commit charge.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -
Wait for version 2 of the current Ultrabooks, like the Lenovo IdeaPad U300S (Doesn't have the nib pointer thing) or Samsung Series 9. They all have a few problems at the moment but will only get better and Intel make the manufacturers price them perfectly for your budget.0

OK, here are some stats from my computer:
Idle - though the hdd is rarely 'still' , at the moment it is quite stable and there are 98 processes, and the commit charge is bobbing around 800.
Properties of computer - 60.6 GB used 13.8 GB left on HDD
procesor intel core duo t2.00 ghz 1gb ram
So a few things I have noticed/always notice
It took me 30 mins to get the comp to become idle on start up
If I try to do anything before it stops churning, then it just can't cope at all
It took me over a minute to open firefox after clicking
Right clicking takes about 15 secs to 1 min for the menu to come up.
I think my network card might be going as it often drops my wireless connection- OH's is fine
Once the computer is up and running then it is OK - I just try to avoid putting it on.... which is not ideal
Any more suggestions welcome

Thanks for both the replies
I will get OH to look into following the sticky. I need to properly back up my system though. I don't have a windows install disc and work doesn't support xp any more, so I am reluctant to do down the wipe and reformat route unless I have to.
will also def get rid of mcafee - it trieds to do a full scan just bout every time i boot up.
Thanks for all your help so far!!0 -
if you are on it now, post the hijackthis log, ram, and commit charge!!
