I sadly have fallen victim to the deposit scam and am still waiting for my £500 refund after 30 days+.
I have contacted my bank and also moved down the MCOL route, but a final phone call to A1 to give them a final chance simply resulted in the guy at the end of the phone going so what !!!
There must be a way to take their website off line and prevent them from doing further business - they are simply crooks !!!

BTW their financial reports are shocking, 5 unsatisfied CCJ's, in debt to nearly £300K and a Winding up petition filled against them 6/6/12 - Will I actually get my money back ?????
  • This company are making our life a misery.
    Avoid at all costs :(

I cannot understand how or why they are still trading

Same old story, I rented a van which went fine was retuned full of fuel etc.the deposit was not returned. The credit card company reversed the charge a1did not contest this. About a year later a1 pop up again on my statement andhave taken over £600 out of the blue, the charges are reversed again but thistime a1 challenged the credit card company claiming that the van was damaged. I’mnot sure what the outcome will be. I have reported them to action fraud, andtrading standards but they don’t seem interested.

A1 have a Google add words account that pops an add up when you search for stuff like national van hire, its pay per click I believe

A1 vans never sent a vat invoice and I can’t find a vat number on their web site, but vat was added to the total when I hired the van

  • This is what has happened to us too. Took 6 months to get our £500 deposit back via visa chargeback. 2 months after that £500 has been stolen from our account by them. They claim the van was damaged which is a complete fabrication as the van was checked over in our presence and of course there was no damage. Nearly a year on and it's still going on. Why can't someone step in and stop this company from making people's lives a misery :(
  • I had the same problems with A1. Used moneyclaim to instigate court proceedings, got the judgement then sent the bailiffs round. Eventually got the money back after about about 3 months. £250 deposit cost them £378 in the end. I won't be using them again.
  • Does anyone know if this company has now gone into liquidation???
I have had the same problem, £500 was taken from my account and I have sent the final notice of warning before court action.
I want to take these guys to court and tried to make one final call to them before paying the money on Money Claim Online to take them to the small claims court. However, none of the numbers for them available on yell.com are working now (when they worked a couple of weeks ago), neither is the main phone number on their website. All the numbers on yell.com say ‘this number is not in use’ (basically all the numbers for their regional branches and their head office), and their main number from their website is permanently engaged. I am worried the company had gone into liquidation after all these years of fraud and dishonesty. I don’t want to lose more money claiming against them (£60 to claim for the money owed plus interest of over a year). Can anyone shed some light on this? It would be great if you could help with any information at all.
  • Im chasing these aswell today but not answering phone.

Van turns up 6 hours early, picked up 3 days late!! Awful company to deal with.

Nobody even checked my details/ driving license when they dropped the van off! Van they dropped off was an absoloute wreck aswell.

Fingers crossed I can get this deposit back.
  • I went to hire a van from Uk van and minibus hire, they are part of a1national van hire, i decided to cancel the van hire, after hearing all the bad press about them, however they had already taken the money out of my account which they said they wouldnt do until i had received a confimation via email which i didnt receive. I called the company up and they said they would return all the money owed, which is over £1000, i am still waiting it has been two weeks now. i have spoken to them again today threatning them with legal action to which they replied GO ON THEN GET YOUR LAWYERS. What should i do?
