Sorry Chris, you asked me way back about the difference between winter tyres and snow and mud. AFAIK winter ones are usually advertised as "winter" tyres whereas the others are usually something like "all season". Winter ones are more effective than summer ones at about 7 celsius and below, it doesn't actually have to be snowy or icy on the road to feel the benefit. You may want to look for a known brand but off the top of my head I can only remember Michelin Alpin and Nokian something or others. There is quite a useful thread about winter tyres in the motoring section of this forum so you'd probably be best off searching for and having a read of that.
