I've never heard of it, no but I do what Nicki has described, only tell mine to go to houses with hallowe'en decs up. We only came back off hol today so very few went up, as such we haven't had many callers.Newly_retired wrote: »Frankly I cannot understand those parents who allow and encourage their very young children to go knocking at strangers' doors, even under supervision. Ermmm why? Can't say I've ever heard of children being snatched indoors as the parents stood beside, directly behind or at the end of the drive. You'd stand a pretty good chance of being caught as the abductor.
We kept most of our lights out but still had 3 knocks. DH went to door and just said "No Thank you, but be careful on the drive which has got wet concrete on it. " Almost true, as we are in the middle of having our drive done and it is highly unsafe today.
Does anyone actually do Tricks if they don't get their Treats?0

We took a plastic snake to sort of scare people with if they asked for a trick - somebody always does.
We only went to decorated houses, and only if we knew the people who lived there. My kids aren't unsupervised, but it's not stranger danger that stops us knocking at the doors of people we don't know - I think it's bad manners.
People are still knocking ... I'm making a sign. My 6 year old is in bed.52% tight0

its one night, they get to dress up and walk around the neighbourhood with their friends and parents in the dark - its exciting for little kids, thats why . I didn't recognise about half the parents or kids who came to our home this evening, but I didn't mind them knocking or getting their treats. . my DD went with her 2 friends and their parents this evening, they are all 10, none of them were asked for tricks (it never occurred to me they would to be honest).0

It's called harmless fun As long as the children (and parents!) are respectful then I don't see a problem, people with pumpkins in the window, and banners are obviously happy to be taking part! Some people will moan about anything! 0 As long as the children (and parents!) are respectful then I don't see a problem, people with pumpkins in the window, and banners are obviously happy to be taking part! Just make sure there are no visible lights. I've grown up with the tradition that guisers only call on homes with a porch light on (or nearest equivalent - I use the hall light as I have no porch). We only had under a dozen guisers call on us tonight before I sent the kids to bed. Turned off the lights and no one has knocked since.0

We only knocked on doors with halloween decorations too - except for the few who are people we knew REALLY well.
Had a few knock on my door - havent the foggiest who they were - did i mind? NO! in fact i would have preferred more as i now have tons of sweets left lol
We left the houses alone that said "no trick or treaters" well alone (but would have any way as these didnt have decorations)
There was one crabby lady who refused point blank to give any treats out even though her house was decorated and her kids were out knocking. Not the kids fault though!
As for the sign - it might not ALWAYS work - some of the kids will be too young to read (with parents stood at the end of the drive and not able to see the sign) or may have reading difficulties. Some generally are little monsters though - but it is only for 1 night
Just think of it this way - When your little monster gets old enough to go trick or treating those kids that keep knocking will have kids of their own - and you can get your own back lol0

Most of ours came in one go which was nice! Neighbour had a halloween party and enquired whether they could bring them over at some point (im in a flat so they wouldn't be able to see a light on etc) 15 7/8 year olds all made the effort to dress up so I gave them all a mini pack of malteasters. It's all harmless fun IMO & everybody knows when halloween is so for one night I don't mind it.
Last year we ordered a pizza on Halloween & the poor delivery man got egged on his way out of the building by a bunch of teenagers!:happylove DD July 2011:happyloveAug 13 [STRIKE]£4235.19[/STRIKE] £2550.00 :cool:0

Exactly this, when I was growing up you only ever went to the houses that had the front door lights on.
The thing that makes me mad though is people who send their kids out to get candy yet don't hand out any out themselves. It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.0

O.P., it will be your own kids in a few years. It's a fun night that you'll enjoy.Pants0
