    Debt-free and Proud!
It's the people that DON'T use them, or any lights for that matter, in thick fog you want to worry about.
  • I drive for a living and every single night I see numerous cars with their fog lights on. This could be in the summer when we have`nt had a foggy day for a very long time. I honestly don`t know if ppl do it because they think it looks 'cool' or because it lights up the side of the road slightly more, either way it`s damn annoying for the cars coming towards you and illegal..

I know a lad that used to have a Saxo and got a fine by a copper on foot for having his fogs on during the day whilst sat at some traffic lights

    RESULT!
  • I'd rather the idiots driving around with fog lights on than the idiots I see driving around in the rain/at dawn and dusk with no lights on

I'd add snow to that list, usually in a white vehicle......

Sorry about bumping this tired thread but I could not leave this unsaid.

I see you're qualifying Rear Fog Lights in your response. You do realise that Rear Fog Lights are no brighter than brake lights (21 Watts), and under Construction and Use Regs they have to be a minimum of 10cm (four inches), away from Brake Lights? I would suggest that if you cannot see Brake Lights being applied alongside Rear Fog Lights then you need to have your eyesight checked.

I shouldn't have had to qualify it, as the OP makes it perfectly clear I was talking about rear fogs, but no matter...

Anyways, I speak from experience when saying it blots out the brake lights, I was once behind a car and could not see any difference when he put his brakes on. This could be very dangerous. I was not speaking from the highway code, i.e. I did not know that this was mentioned exactly as I said it in the highway code. I was surprised to read that it is mentioned in the HC...... I would suggest that as it is mentioned in the highway code, it is (or should be) a well known problem of having rear fogs on in clear or wet weather and rather backs me up on what I said.

Although there may be a rule of not more than 4 inches, I wonder if that only applies to the distance between bulbs and not to the distance between reflectors? Perhaps you can tell us? Irrespective, we know as a fact that it can cause the the brake lights to be obscured.

Although they are the same bulb wattage the reflectors & lens do intensify the beam, as kindly noted in post #41 And I have just confirmed as much on my own car, I can happily look at the brake lights but the fog lights burn out my retinas.

Perhaps your position on this is therefore slightly misguided?

However, the idea, much like the idea of the flashing Rear Red Light on Formula 1 Racing Cars, is to allow you to see the vehicle in front in fog from a greater distance, allowing you time to react to the vehicle in front slowing down or stopping.
As long as you can see them applying the brake.... which you certainly wouldn't in heavy fog, the purpose of the light is so you can follow a vehicle infront at a safe distance in heavy fog. The indication you are getting too close is that the fog light infront "becomes brighter".
The reason why I don't think it matters enough to vent frustration on a forum like this is because it won't stop it happening, there will always be stupid people on the roads, and these stupid people won't be reading your comments on this forum.
I disagree, the thread has been viewed 1500 times, I would think the message may have been taken on board by quite a few who did not realise how stupid they were being, and the more threads like this and in discussion time as I have done in the past - the better.

I would hope that all the rear lights on a vehicle in front are bright enough to be seen by the driver following behind, otherwise there would be no point is having lights fitted.
This is no doubt your attempt at humour, fair enough, I'm sure you aren't so stupid as to not realise the point I was making. :D
Ah yes, you see, now that you have lost your sight you shouldn't really be driving should you.

I'm not sure of the sequence for putting on my fog lights on the Citroen GC4P, but I think it's front on first, followed by the rears, and then the reverse order is used to switch them off. I've never used them, never had the occasion to use them.
I'm happy for you. :D <<< see, I really am happy
