A pet hate of mine. "Fogwits" they are generally called around our way.

I must say that in 20 years of driving, I can probably count the number of times I have genuinely needed rear fog lights on one hand. Visibility is rarely that bad, and when it is, there is usually someone 20 yards or so behind who can see me perfectly well and does not need my rear fogs burning a hole in their retina.

These days people automatically put them on at the slightest hint of mist, then drive around for days on end afterwards having forgotten they were on. The other types are the chavs who think it looks cool to drive everywhere with the front fogs on.

I just treat these lights as a warning that the driver is probably incompetent.
  • When fog lights are on, there should be a six inch square light in the centre of the dashboard flashing a yellow 'fog' which could describe the weather outside the vehicle or the condition of the brain of the driver.

Is that also true of rear fog lights? Obviously not.

And whether or not is true for front fogs the fact of the matter is that front fogs on a car approaching you are too bright 9 times out 10, whether due to bad alignment or to simple fact that bright lights, even when not beamed directly into your eyes, do leach sufficient glare to be uncomfortable to someone who is almost but not quite infront of the beam.

About time the police got proactive about this and prosecuted the morons who use them without reason, after all it is an offence:-
    Rule 236

You MUST NOT use front or rear fog lights unless visibility is seriously reduced (see Rule 226) as they dazzle other road users and can obscure your brake lights. You MUST switch them off when visibility improves.

    [Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

And they should prosecute the ones who will not use dipped headlights in bad visibility, either using sidelights or no lights, so called "professional" HGV drivers being the worst culprits, again it is an offence.

    Rule 226

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236).

    [Law RVLR regs 25 & 27]

The whole point of fog lights is that they illuminate underneath the fog, they should not cause ANY visual impairment to other drivers at all......... (Unless your in a Kitcar sitting less than 5 inches from the ground).

    Depends on the design.

Mine are yellow and illuminate about the same area as driving around with your full beam on does. They actually work really well in the fog and snow, such that when visibility is that poor I drive on just sidelights and foglights, though obviously not when someone is coming the other way as it will likely dazzle them.

Many "sporty" looking cars such as higher spec Golfs tend to have front fogs like mine only white, which are utterly useless in actual thick fog but some people think they look cool and leave them on all the time.

If people want to put them on does it really matter to you?

The only people that can do anything about it won't bother, and if the offenders wish to look stupid in the meantime, then let them look like they are stupid, at least you can see them.
Wow! Don't some folk get upset about nothing?

The whole point of fog lights is to be used when its foggy or when the drivers visibility is seriously reduced. Its not hard to work out when you have clear visibility and you turn the foggys off.

Unfortunately the morons are here to stay.

Just come across this link, its the alternative highway code.

If you dont know why it matters, you shouldnt be driving.

Driving in froont of someone who has their front spots on doesnt bother me or driving towards them..BUT driving behind someone with their rear fogs on in anything other than bad foggy conditons gets on my nerves for reasons already stated.

The amount of people who use them in the rain defies belief

Only gripe really is with idiots using them in the rain, thus reflecting off the road into your eye's...... 4x4's simply should not have them fitted. Mostly people who moan about front fogs are in my opinion just being bloody minded, in just the same way they moan about those "blue headlights".

Rears are VERY annoying yes and even when overtaken and flashed with fog lights, they're often far too dumb to realise the problem.
No different really to elderly folk who drive along with the indicators going for 15 miles.

Fortunately now a days, most cars reset the fog lights when the ignition is turned off, thus negating the pillocks who forget to turn them off manually.

There are very few drivers who keep the fog lights on deliberately, the most annoying are those who are so f*cking stupid they they're still using them in the middle of summer.

  • I've had a few cars where the warning light on the dash has been very small or in a place away from the eyeline - this could easily be a factor.

I have no problem with front fogs - I just think 'Chav' contemptuously when I see them (often on a Citroen Saxo or similarly poxy Peugeot).

Rear fogs can be a nuisance I agree - they can affect visibility of other lights in the wrong conditions.

I do often use my front fogs on unlit roads at night though - they do help with close range vision (and won't dazzle oncoming vehicles).
