Can anyone recommend this for white school shirts for a five year old? Would extra laundry bleach help?

Still undecided, but it may be worth it.

I've popped in a scoop of pound shop Oxy granules on my whites and they were fine. I would pre-treat any existing stains on shirts for a five year old though, Gloop doesn't have enzymes to dissolve stains as bio products do, so you shouldn't expect miracles.

PS Love your signature... Sybil is one of my favourite DW characters.

After many battles through Reception with biro and marker, I am resigned to a high rate of attrition for little bear's shirts. However OH's office is managed by the owner who is very particular about cleanliness, so I have to keep up to scratch there and darling father likes to go to church in a white shirt and also has a rich and varied social life which requires smart dressing. I am thinking gloop with added generic oxy thing should be okay. It won't cost that much to try.

And I would love to be like Sybil. She is just so sensible and grounded. That is a very underated quality. I would also swap evil cat for a swamp dragon any day - the swamp dragon would be less dangerous! Evil cat may be eighteen, frail, iffy kidneys, dodgy spine and weigh less than a bag of sugar but she draws blood from the vet every time.

Also with your signature - I never keep stuff for best. Best never happens. Thank you for your help!

Sorry about the very late reply: I suspect you got your answer from trial-and-error some time ago.

I suspect that you didn't use enough washing-soda in your concoction. This softens the water and therefore enhances the cleaning-action of the soap. I'm not sure that you mentioned what kind of soap you used, but not all kinds of hand-soap are harsh enough to really shift grease. The next time you make up a batch try using Fairy household soap or the lovely Sunlight if you can find it. The scent of Fairy is very pleasant and it comes out a fresh green colour. A bit of tea-tree oil in it and it will smell really fresh and clean.

To anyone who has any doubts about the effectiveness of gloop compared to proprietary detergents should definitely give it a go. You could save yourself an absolute fortune. And make a dent in Proctor & Gamble's massive profits. Win/win!

I made my first batches with hand soap from the supermarkets, just basic cheap soap, & they were fine; but the last load I made with Fairy & found it kept separating, so will be using white soap again later tonight.
I probably mentioned back earlier in the thread (ages ago) that I use a nappy bucket with a lid for storage.
I thought buckets with lids would be easy to find but they weren't.
Got it from B**ts, had to order it specially, it paid for itself within a couple of bucketloads.

I use nappy buckets l eft over from when DS2 was a baby, & even 9 years ago it was jolly hard to find lidded nappy buckets, or indeed any nappy buckets. I put my last lot in a 7l storage box I'd got for artisanal bread (which we didn't like) but it won't fit in the cupboard under my sink, so will be using the nappy bucket again.

I use it for DS2's shirts, & did for DS1's white school shirts (his school had black polo shirts for Yr11, yay! & no uniform is neeeded for Sixth form from September), & it comes up as well as anything on white polo shirts that have been dragged around the school as cleaning rags... I can't use bio stuff much as DS1's eczema gets worse with them, so the best thing I've found at the moment is to soak the shirts Friday night in soda crystals or biotex, then put on a hot wash early Saturday morning with laundry gloop & a dash of stardrops. (Early Sat am so they can dry in case ironing is needed, & I can get the other loads of uniform done too ;))

  • Hi,
I'm trying to find/ buy/ make washing powder that smells! I love the fragrance of stuff (am particularly partial to Daz!) and all the recipes/ eco brands are either fragrance free or really expensive. I have 2 kids and am a childminder so we have a lot of dirt on stuff! Can you help? Thanks!

Have you tried the stuff from Method? It's not mega-cheap, but it's often on offer in Sainsbury's and like any washing stuff, you don't necessarily need to use as much as recommended. There's also a try-me-free promotion on at the moment.
