Laundry Gloop - Gloopy Thread !!!

  • I'm not convinced that it's easy to get it mixed properly as a powder, especially if you grate a bar of white soap. Really, the gkoop is so easy I can't think of a good reason not to make it in liquid form. The borax or borax substitute isn't absolutely vital. It acts as a really good stain-remover, especially with whites but the combo of washing soda and borax is what makes the mixture want to separate so you have to ensure that both are completely dissolved. I wouldn't chuck in any stain-remover unless you feel that it's absolutely necessary. That stuff is expensive and seems to be the opposite of what you're attempting to do: wash clothes clean as cheaply as possible without throwing around superfluous expensive chemicals.
  • Well, I've just run out of washing powder so thought I'd throw a batch of gloop together - 4 litres of water, bar of soap and 1/2 cup of soda crystals - it's cooling in a tub now but showing no signs of "glooping". Is this right? Also, it's a strange shade of grey!

  • It takes about 24 hours to set. No quick results I'm afraid!
1/2 a cup of soda seems a low amount. The quantities I use are 8oz (225 grammes) of soda and the same amount of borax to 1 100g bar of finely grated soap.
And yes, it doesn't look very pretty, though mine was off white rather than grey.

  • I spoke too soon - went back later and it was set! Will see if it works in this current wash.

PS I used the "recipe" quoted on this thread! Only 4 litres of water so doesn't make masses of gloop.

  • Pleased to report that with a dash of Lidl "sensitive" conditioner, and a small scoop of oxy wotist, this works well! Time will tell with any grease stains etc, but so far so good. I love nice smelling laundry so will continue to use the Lidl cheapo conditioner as it's lovely!

  • Me again! For those who are connoisseurs of gloop, can you tell me why it doesn't get grease stains out? I don't really have the time to search through and pre-treat any items that might have a stain or mark on them so how can I combat this? I guess I might not be using enough of the gloop in the wash so can increase that (would more make for better cleaning?), plus I will have to start using stain remover in each load I think. Apart from grease stains (and similar types of marks) it seems to clean well so I just need that additional boost - any suggestions gratefully received!

I have been using gloop for about 2 years now and I love it. Pre-treated stains come out first go and no one has had a reaction to it. My newish kitchen floor drives me mad, it will not come clean and I tried, stardrops/stardrops with ammonia/ bio washing liquid/ flash etc etc. The other day I poured some gloop on the floor and used a really wrung out mop on it, mopped it off and voila :j another triumph for gloop. :)

Sorry about the very late reply: I suspect you got your answer from trial-and-error some time ago.

I suspect that you didn't use enough washing-soda in your concoction. This softens the water and therefore enhances the cleaning-action of the soap. I'm not sure that you mentioned what kind of soap you used, but not all kinds of hand-soap are harsh enough to really shift grease. The next time you make up a batch try using Fairy household soap or the lovely Sunlight if you can find it. The scent of Fairy is very pleasant and it comes out a fresh green colour. A bit of tea-tree oil in it and it will smell really fresh and clean.

To anyone who has any doubts about the effectiveness of gloop compared to proprietary detergents should definitely give it a go. You could save yourself an absolute fortune. And make a dent in Proctor & Gamble's massive profits. Win/win!

Definitely put it in the drum - it's probably a bit thick and gloopy (:)) to put in the drawer.
