I've read several articles mentioning that gloop blocks pipes when put in the drawer, I've never put it in the drawer as a result. It dissolves very well in the drum.

Well I have all of the ingredients and a few bottles for storage so lets get cooking! I have a huge pan but it's preserving so I hope it still works ok as it's REALLY thick - can't see why not as ok for jam!

  • Be wary if it's an aluminium pan but any one will do as long as it's big enough. Don't be tempted to not dilute it enough: that stuff will thicken like you can't imagine once it's cooled and then you won't be able to get the stuff out of your containers easily. This is the voice of experience speaking here. Have fun: it's very rewarding indeed to make something so useful and inexpensive so very easily. You may never go back to shop-bought detergents ever again.

Going to have a go at this , got a 9 litre garden tub cleaned out so going to knock this up,

Some people let this set with with the lid on, so if you come back to this after 24 hours how do you manage to decant this into bottles?

Or how long do you let in cool before you decant it into bottles?

If you decant it straight into a bottle , does it set really thickly and do you then struggle to get it out ?

I decant mine straight into the containers once it's cool enough to muck about with it with no risk of scalding myself (I'm a clumsy-bum, so I'd rather not take too many risks). But as you put the boiling solution into a bucket (that's the danger-moment for me) and then whack about 8 litres or so of hand-hot water from the tap it shouldn't be that long, say about ten or fifteen minutes or so. If it's still pretty warm when you do your decanting it might be wise not to screw the lids fast shut until the concoction is cold.

My own feeling is that you might be better to decant it while it's still fairly warm because if it's cold you might need a funnel if you're going to store it in containers with a narrow neck. Because it's GLOOPY and could make a mess.

I probably mentioned back earlier in the thread (ages ago) that I use a nappy bucket with a lid for storage.
I thought buckets with lids would be easy to find but they weren't.
Got it from B**ts, had to order it specially, it paid for itself within a couple of bucketloads.

I can't be doing with storing things in buckets. As I said, I'm a clumsy-bum so it would only be a matter of time before I droppped something in it or kicked it over. Plus, I don't have enough storage-space to keep a full bucket of anything anywhere.

Also, those four-pint plastic milk cartons are FREE! Well, they are if you're buying milk anyway.

Trust me, you wouldn't be clumsier than me (I use a walking stick and am very wobbly) but I've got my bucket wedged in a corner where I won't knock it or trip over it.
What put me off using the milk containers was people reporting that they made an awful mess trying to dispense it (How very me that would be...) Does your gloop pour OK, B&T?

Yes, it does, with one bar of Fairy household soap in about ten litres of water it is pretty gloopy but not too thick to pour at all after a bit of a shake.

The next batch I'll be making will be with lovely, lemon-scented Sunlight. My sister went to Canada with my (extensive) shopping list and the dearest darling brought me six bars back. I think I might have enough soap to last several years, maybe even longer.
