Well, today I had chance to clean out the fridge. Out went 3 packets of 3 peppers so 9 peppers in all!!! The plan was to make some chutney but I just ran right out of time.
I have some green tomatoes too to make chutney but I am concerned they will also have to go out if I am not careful. Can they be frozen?0 -
Thank you for the praise, and for the info
Stock is now made, strained and cooling in a jug on my pantry floor. For a few minutes I have to admit that I looked at it as if I were some kind of alchemist who had created a magical elixir!!! <insert blushing and laughing at self smilie> It really is "summat from nowt" isn't it? *looks in awe at self's magical hands*0 -

So DH noticed the porridge oats were (well) out of date, and I now have homemade hobnobs in the oven... go me. And I've stewed the plums so they won't go off. And apart from that we've spent the whole weekend (at least it feels like) buying and assembling two new IKEA kitchen units to go in the hole in the kitchen. Not very money saving but it's a lot cheaper than a new kitchen would be...
Fuddle, the point of being careful when you can is so that when times are a bit harder you don't have to worry so much about the pennies. Sending good thoughts your way.
Edit: OMG those hobnobs are really very nice, aren't they? And such an easy recipe. I used butter this time but I might go with Stork next time so that my son's friend who can't eat dairy can have some. Mmm.Make £2023 in 2023: (all decluttering), current total £2860 me, £330 for friends & family, £468 charity donations.0 -
Fab Pixie. Thanks very much - so at least I just need to prep them even if I cant do the actual chutney.
Thinking about it, time seems to be the major factor as to why I end up throwing so much away. I guess I need to stop eating or just sloooowwwww down!!!Fitting in food around gym times is now my quest.

I've got an apple sitting in the fruit basket that's been to work & back 3 times and is now bruised too much to go back for quick eating... Will chop it up with some more & do apple pancakes tomorrow I think, or add it to porridge in the morning.
When I made Weezl's calzone the other day, the cheeseless sauce was too runny so I couldn't use it all. I kept it in the fridge overnight & it went thick, so I guess that's what I need to do next time, but I added cooking water from peas & served it as gravy with shepherdless pie the next day - I thought it was yummy, but the boys didn't... No waste though!
Tonight, I used potatoes from the huge sack for mash, & they really were not so nice.... I peeled them which I don't usually, but DS2 does prefer them peeled, & the peels were just fit for the bin, plus 1 small potato was slimy & disgusting, so went in the compost bin.0 -
hello, can i join in please?
Am going to have a go after reading the whole thread.
Today I have made a large chilli which will do for 1 x meal for two, then changed to spag bol for two and then into enchiladas. Also made a chicken curry for two meals for the two of us and a pot of minestrone soup (for DH to take to work and for me when at home). I used onions, pepper and celery from last week. Had left over braising steak and turned into a meat and onion pie (made from left over pastry) for tea with veggies.
Not sure if this will help anyone but when I have left over bread/stale bread I sometime turn this into pizza, so top with sauce then any veggies, chorizo, cheese and pop into oven. I also do this with any left over naan but am sure you already do this!
So today, I have wasted no food yay, am a happy bunny. I have three compost bins so use my peelings (which are finely shaven) in them.:T:D

As I always do I have dinner at my DDs last night. She cooked a large chicken (there are 7 of us ) today as I go there to pick up my grandsons for the school run she asked if I would strip the remainder of the chicken for her as they will have a curry tonight .Not a problem as I come home with the carcass which I will turn into stock for a base for carrot and coriander soup later this week. She works full time as does her husband and hasn't the time to make it herself so I get the leavings as she knows I hate waste of any sort .The chicken will have been in her fridge overnight so I know its fine. When I get in from the school run this morning it will go in the SC with some onion and carrot and some lazy garlic and be left on low until tonigh when I get back around 6.The resulting pot of stock will be strained and when cool put in the fridge. Not only I don't waste my own stuff I won't waste hers either
:)
