    Its a GAS oven.

    Oopps, :o

I was just thinking of the power cuts we get here and how thankful I am having a gas hob. :) ..but I do have to light with matches.

Some gas ovens have electric ignition for lighting them not sure if you can use matches to light them if the power is off?

Just because their children will only eat chicken nuggets isn't your fault.

How would they feed the children in the case of a power cut?

Probably ship the whole family off to McDonalds and then expect the power company to foot the bill for their meals out.

They obviously don't understand anything about a landlord's repairing obligations so it might be time to let them know. Do not offer these chancer tenants anything until they ask directly. Then decline. Eaton Rifle is right: you need to do some expectation management or you'll be making a rod for your own back with this lot until doomsday.

If you get a call to say it could take a few weeks to get the part and they're ideal tenants then sure, buy them a halogen oven. Otherwise, you have filled your obligations and its out of your hands.

Remember that you can be held liable for anything you suggest, so don't tell them to chuck the nuggets in the toaster unless your willing to replace it when they break it (or light themselves up) by shoving the cutlery in it to try and get the nuggets back out afterwards.

The tenants lack of cooking skills and blackmail effort, I don't know whether to find funny or sad...

Gas can get cut off too you know. Workmen down the road drill through the gas mains.....?

A power outage (also power cut, blackout or power failure) is a short- or long-term loss of the electric power to an area.

They refered to a "power cut".

    Hi all

Tenant phoned at 4.30pm today to say they couldnt get oven to work. Gas fitter attended at 5.30 and has ordered a new part which should be here within the next day or two.

Tenant has since phoned me and said that their kids wont eat anything except nuggets and the like and what should they do about feeding the kids. I suggested microwave or hob meals but he said they wont eat that, only stuff that goes in the oven or under grill and it will cost £15 a day to eat out at mc d's until its fixed.

He hasnt said he wants me to pay this specifically but has made damn sure that i got what he was getting at without him actually saying it.

Where do i stand on this? Ive gone to best efforts to fix the oven and cant do it any quicker than when the parts arrive. Do i have to pay for them to eat out or order in take aways?

This is another reminder that btl is not an investment, it's a business

I imagine they are telling you this to encourage you to get it fixed asap but you are best placed to judge that yourself

Give them a bag of hot gravel to eat. They sound ghastly and thick: do they walk into walls until you tell them they have to switch the lights on and pay their electricity bill?

Sounds like a stressed out dad with whining kids; given this is the only incident in an otherwise good 18 month agreement I wouldn't write it off.

Perhaps a bit of balance, suggest you prepare a reasonable explanation of your responsibilities and how you are meeting them, to discuss with them?

And I thought I was sometimes overly pedantic!

The point being made was about a utility supplier's obligation or otherwise to compensate/provide cooking alternatives when supply is cut.

But thanks for the linguistic lesson!
