It is interesting that the last 3 contributors to this thread have absolutely nothing to contribute!
What are you scared of?
TruckerT
difficult to contribute much
you are going to London tomorrow.. well done, it's a marvellous place with lots of interesting places to visit although one is out of bounds
you are offering support for 'occupy london'
and what exactly are you supporting; are you sure you will fit in with the public school educuted children of rich people ?
so far they have suceeded in closing St Pauls; is that one of your objectives or is it simply collateral damage0 -

They set out to "occupy" the London Stock Exchange but ended up disrupting the Church of England instead.
They brought tents but don't sleep there, instead preferring to pop off home for a nice hot shower.
Their spokeswoman on telly today admitted she won't be there next week as she has to go back to work. "In Education" you see.
Does anyone have any idea what these ridiculous imitation protestors are actually protesting about? Do they even know themselves?
You may or may not agree with the protests, and we know why as its against your personal interests.
However, I do commend someone actually doing something to fight their cause. TruckerT is doing that. You can try to knock him for doing so, but you will fail.0 -

I don't commend people who actually do something unless its the right thing
pol pots supporters actually did something (25% of the population were killed)
hitler youth actually did something ( a lot of bad things happened)
young communists did something (again millions died)
now I'm not suggesting that these nice (mainly) white middle class/rich people will do much harm but the principle is still there0 -

Where do the banks fit in to your spectrum of right-and-wrong?

Despite the weather forecast, I plan to travel to London tomorrow, and offer my support to the Occupy London demonstrators (I haven't seen the news yet today, so it is possible that they have all been arrested, in which case I will be on my own)
I have never been on any kind of demonstration before, and I was gutted that I didn't join the massive march against Blair's iraq war

ps I have a tent in my cupboard, but on this occasion I will be leaving it at home (the tent pegs are rusty, and would probably not penetrate concrete)
They just want to make a nuisance of themselves, disrupt the area and waste countless hours of police time that could be put to better use.
The church has asked them nicely to leave, but they don't give a monkeys. Too full of their own self importance. If I don't reply to your post,
you're probably on my ignore list.0 -
What are they actually asking for in practical rather than philosophical terms?0

my general view is that the ability to borrow and lend can increase the welfare of both parties.
however banks are in a rather privileged position compared to other companies so should be closely regulated; so things like capital ratios etc need to be regulated and the types of assets controlled
I support simple banks that borrow money from us/commercial companies and then lend money back to support investment and appropriate spending
the size of banks should be restricted and the number increased to increase competition (which I approve of as I think it is for the general good)
innovation is a real problem with banks as clever complex 'instruments ' have proved very bad news.
I don't know the full answers but in general banks have enabled a vast increaae in wealth for us all.0 -

Hopefully, I will be better equipped to answer your question after tomorrow, but my own intention is to provoke debates like this at every opportunity
There are more and more 'anti-bankers' wherever you look, and given the lead story on the BBC 10pm news just now, it appears that the politicians are chasing each other down the road and out of sight at an ever-increasing speed
As much as anything else, I would like people to at least consider the possibility that we are about to move into an era which may be uncomfortably similar to the first half of the 20th century, rather than realising the exciting possibilities which we all looked forward to at the dawn of the new millenium
