    No we didnt.

I'd recommend the video I linked to as a starter for 10, and then either the corresponding book or the Baby Whisperer book.

How did you think this was going to work?

  • I know I made a list, but I think you are being far too prescriptive and expecting too much. Have you got what to expect in the first year or a similar good book? You wait for 6 week colic!

By the way, ask your wife when the baby was most active while in her tummy. I'd bet it was nighttime. It takes a while for babies to work out that night is for sleeping.

How long are you expecting her to settle for? Swaddling can help, but don't expect her to go more than an hour at a time for the next few weeks. Her tummy is the size of a marble and will need topping up regularly.

Did you do any antenatal classes?

They dont seem to do antenatal classes any more , my son and daughter in law have just had their first ( oddly 2 weeks early as well and now 12 days old ) They were told they would have to pay for classes

OP , It is early days , some babies settle very easily , One of mine slept constantly another one didnt sleep through the night until he was 3 !

Its can be very hard as a new parent , and the more 'advice ' we are given ( from official sources ) the more we dont trust our instincts .

Do what ever you feel happy with .and works ! ,I always thought the first 6 weeks were the hardest , but it will pass

  • OP, have you considered that the problem may not in fact be the moses basket.

Given that the baby seems happy enough in it during the day, perhaps they are not happy with level of light in the evening (too dark/bright etc).

My baby isn't sensitive to such things, but I know a lot of others are.

Best £180 I ever spent. It gave me friendships with 6 other local couples that had babies due around the same time and were going through what I was.

  • Thanks to everyone for your responses. A lot to be taken on board. I will see how it goes.

My son was exactly the same, he fed every 2 hours 24 hours a day for the first few weeks (he was 6 weeks early) and had trouble settling after a feed. We tried to differentiate between day and night by playing with him after a feed, noises in the background etc during the day, and on a night everything would be quieter, lights dimmed and have a cuddle before being put back in his basket. Eventually he figured out that nighttime was for sleeping, daytime was for playing.

The other thing that we found really helped was swaddling. We used a SwaddleMe and it was fab! Better than just using a normal blanket as it has velcro straps to stop baby wriggling free and getting cold in the night. we also added blankets to keep him toasty. Also, looking back, when he was first born, I think I was so concerned about him overheating that perhaps I allowed him to get a bit cool in the night which woke him up. You could get a room thermometer which tells you what clothing/blankets a baby should have on for the room temp if you're concerned about overheating. (I know you haven't mentioned this but thought I'd throw the idea in anyway!)

I hope you find something that works for you, I promise it does get easier!

Until they have a growth spurt, catch a cold, have their jabs, start teething, learn to crawl/walk/talk................... :o
