I'd be horrified if my surgery did that. I am guessing that the calls all go to a central number which allocated appointments for different surgeries. I'd be tempted to phone the hospital and ask them to make me an appointment as I couldn't get one at the surgery - at least their number is free from a landline.

It's actually the direct line to the surgery! Ridiculous.
I ended up phoning the community midwives office and leaving a voicemail. Got a call back about half an hour later. My midwife is off all week now (although she was at my GP surgery until 3pm! ) but I've been put in contact with another midwife :)

    Really????

Yep. He saw me getting dressed, grabbed his giraffe, hopped into his chair and dozed off while I was putting my shoes on. Cheeky sausage.

I live less than 20m from my GP surgery. I need to speak to my midwife (whom I've never met in the 37 weeks I've been pregnant, way to go NHS) but I need a sweep, so I had to phone the surgery. I called at 12:05.
The phoneline kept me on for 30 seconds before telling me the surgery closed between 12 & 3:30.
Firstly, I can see from my window that even now they are open, and my appointments are regularly at 2/3pm so they're obviously open.
Their phone number is also an 0844 number with no alternative, so it really eats up my credit.
A few weeks ago I went down to the surgery to make an appointment as I didn't have any credit left, and was told I have to call for an appointment. I pointed out how stupid this was, and explained about my lack of credit. The outcome? No appointment unless I spent 30p a minute to call them.
It really peed me off. If they had a standard 01 number, it would be free with my inclusive minutes, but no.
Grr. I'd move doctors, but all of the surgeries around here have the same 0844 numbers and 'telephone appt only' policies! Grr

    Whats a sweep? sounds nasty....

My GPs' surgery was like this for about a year (worse!):

all appointments by 'phone; all appointments same-day; all to be made by ringing at 8.30 in the morning (line always engaged...); if all appointments were taken, ring again at 8.30 the next morning...

some patients called in to plead with them, because they could not ring at 8.30 a.m., they were sent away, told they had to ring then.

In the end, they changed it.

And at least they didn't use a premium number!

Involves the midwife putting a finger into the cervix and separating the membranes from the cervix. I'm not very excited about it

I'm not leaving my 17 m/o son alone in the house while I go out. That's sh*t parenting.

..take the sleeping 17m the 20m...not difficult.

I have incredibly bad back and hip problems with this pregnancy. Have no intention of carrying a sleeping 17 m/o anywhere, let alone down and then back up about 40 odd stairs in the rain.
I just did that crazy thing some of us parents do: tucked him in & left him to sleep for a couple of hours. :)
